{"id":485162,"date":"2026-02-23T05:52:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T05:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/485162\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T05:52:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T05:52:07","slug":"competition-committee-has-not-discussed-onside-kick-alternative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/485162\/","title":{"rendered":"Competition Committee has not discussed onside kick alternative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NFL\u2019s Competition Committee <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarkMaske\/with_replies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">did not discuss<\/a> the alternative to the onside kick during their meeting on Sunday at the Scouting Combine, Mark Maske reports.<\/p>\n<p>The dynamic kickoff has essentially made the onside kick irrelevant, with a minuscule success rate, as teams now have to declare an onside kick before the kickoff. (The success rate of the onside kick began falling after the NFL banned running starts on kickoffs in 2018.)<\/p>\n<p>PFT reported earlier this month that the NFL would consider replacing the onside kick with a fourth-and-13 play. (Or a fourth-and-15 or a fourth-and-20 instead of an onside kick.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t get talked about yet,\u201d Rich McKay, the co-chairman of the Competition Committee, said, via Maske. \u201cWe\u2019ll see. I do think that the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nfl\/profootballtalk\/rumor-mill\/news\/fourth-and-13-alternative-for-onside-kick-will-be-discussed-again-this-offseason\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">onside kick recovery issue<\/a> . . . is a real one that you\u2019ve seen the statistics. You\u2019ve seen where the numbers went. And at some point, it would be nice to see those move back to a more historical place. That\u2019s just one person\u2019s view. And you know what one person\u2019s view doesn\u2019t get you?
