Thousands of homes and businesses lost power Sunday evening as one of the largest snowstorms to hit New Jersey<\/a> in 30 years started hitting the state with heavy snow and high winds. <\/p>\n

New Jersey officials declared a state of emergency in advance of a major winter storm expected to slam the state with 8 to 20 inches of snow and blizzard conditions<\/a> by the time it ends Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am urging you to stay off the roads Sunday through Monday,\u201d Gov. Mikie Sherrill<\/a> said on Saturday. \u201cThe heaviest snowfall is expected between Sunday night and Monday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

New Jersey\u2019s Board of Public Utilities is coordinating with utility companies to organize a swift response to expected power outages from heavy snow and high winds, officials said earlier Sunday.<\/p>\n

Utility companies from other states have already responded to New Jersey and are prepared to help, Sherrill said on Sunday morning. <\/p>\n

Officials urged residents to report outages to their utility companies and periodically check on neighbors during outages. <\/p>\n

Atlantic and Cape May counties – from 1 p.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday. Total snow accumulations between 15 and 24 inches. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.<\/p>\n

Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties – from 1 p.m. Sunday to 6 p.m Monday. Total snow accumulations between 18 and 22 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.<\/p>\n

Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem and northwestern Burlington – from 10 a.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday. Total snow accumulations between 16 and 22 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.<\/p>\n

Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties – until 6 p.m. Monday. Total snow accumulations between 18 and 25 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.<\/p>\n

Monmouth, Ocean and southeastern Burlington counties – from 10 a.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday. Total snow accumulations between 20 and 28 inches. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.<\/p>\n

Coastal flood threat<\/p>\n

Moderate coastal flooding is also a concern along the Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay.<\/p>\n

Coastal flood warnings have been issued for Atlantic, Cape May, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and southeastern Burlington counties from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWidespread minor to near moderate coastal flooding likely with the Monday afternoon high tide,\u201d the weather service said. \u201cTidal flooding may also occur with the Monday night high tide.\u201d<\/p>\n
