Gavin Newsom forgets that \u201cthe effects of his presidency will remain long after he departs the Oval Office,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/can-newsom-live-down-his-record-b7cff26d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sniffs Karl Rove at The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. \u201cThe same is true for Mr. Newsom\u201d; he\u2019s \u201cout as governor next Jan. 4\u201d but the grim \u201ceffects of his eight years as California\u2019s chief executive will linger as well:\u201d<\/p>\n<p> The Golden State is no longer a \u201cmagnet for jobs and commerce.\u201d US News &amp; World Report\u2019s \u201cannual \u2018Best States\u2019 ranking puts California at No. 32 on its economy, 42 on fiscal stability, 45 on growth, 46 on employment, and dead last for opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conservative: Literary Lovers of Blacklists<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe author Arundhati Roy is\u00a0boycotting\u00a0the Berlinale film festival,\u201d because organizers won\u2019t slam Israel,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commentary.org\/seth-mandel\/the-free-speech-advocates-who-love-blacklists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">marvels Commentary\u2019s Seth Mandel<\/a>. Yet shouldn\u2019t \u201cfree speech\u201d also apply to those who\u2019d seek to\u00a0avoid\u00a0politics? <\/p>\n<p>Roy and a group of 81 actors and others whine that the Berlinale refuses to \u201caffirm\u201d anti-Israel narratives. Beyond that, they \u201cwant an anti-Jewish blacklist. In the name of free speech and anti-fascism. And they want Germany to lead the way.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Jewish writers are already \u201ciced out\u201d of the publishing field, while \u201canti-Israel polemics get published no matter the content or quality.\u201d The pro-boycott crowd \u201cclaims that the world is living a re-run of the 1930s, but the real complaint is that it\u2019s not enough like the 1930s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speech beat: Labour\u2019s Censorship Schemes<\/p>\n<p>An \u201cimmigration case playing out in a New York federal court\u201d has \u201csignificant implications\u201d for \u201cthe ongoing debate over global censorship,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearinvestigations.com\/articles\/2026\/02\/18\/deporting_censorship_us_targets_key_ally_of_british_government_over_free_speech_1165667.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reports Paul D.
