The WTA Tour is moving along to North America this week. While fans can catch tennis at a WTA tournament in Texas, the main event is a WTA 500 tournament in Merida, Mexico, with Emma Navarro looking to defend her title\u2013and maybe win 6-0 6-0 again, as she did last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

LWOT breaks down the four opening matches scheduled for Monday. Who will advance?<\/p>\n

WTA Merida Day 1 Predictions
\nVictoria Jim\u00e9nez Kasintseva vs Yulia Putintseva<\/p>\n

Head-to-head:\u00a0Putintseva 1-0<\/p>\n

Putintseva is always flashy and unpredictable. Against Jim\u00e9nez Kasintseva, who qualified for the main draw, I think she\u2019ll be able to use her crafty rhythm to win easily here. Putintseva has had an okay start to 2026, as she typically enjoys the outdoor hard courts.<\/p>\n

Prediction: Putintseva in 3<\/p>\n

Katie Boulter vs Beatriz Haddad Maia<\/p>\n

Head-to-head:\u00a0Boulter 3-1<\/p>\n

Haddad Maia hasn\u2019t been able to get anything going in 2026. The Brazilian is winless at Tour-level this season, and her lefty defense counterpunching is not a good matchup for Boulter\u2019s flat, strong groundstrokes<\/a>. The Brit leads the pair\u2019s head-to-head, and she\u2019s had a much better 2026 thus far, winning the WTA 250 Ostrava tournament.<\/p>\n

Prediction: Boulter\u00a0in 3<\/p>\n

Emiliana Arango vs Anastasia Potapova<\/p>\n

Head-to-head:\u00a0Arango 1-0<\/p>\n

This will be an interesting one. Potapova is the heavy favorite by form, and a slight favorite by ranking. Arango has had a nightmarish start to 2026, putting together an 0-5 record (and a 0-10 record in sets); however, Mexico brings out the best in her. She\u2019s the defending finalist here, and also made the WTA 500 final in Guadalajara last season. Those two results are largely carrying her ranking, which sits just inside the Top 50. She could be under a lot of pressure, as a result.<\/p>\n

However, I do think Arango has a good chance to win this match in an upset. Arango has a crafty game<\/a> that could pressure Potapova, as Potapova meanwhile had a poor recent loss in Dubai qualifying. Arango won the pair\u2019s only match, interestingly in Guadalajara during the 2023 edition.<\/p>\n

Prediction: Arango in 3<\/p>\n

Marina Stakusic vs Dayana Yastremska<\/p>\n

Head-to-head:\u00a0First meeting<\/p>\n

Stakusic is a familiar name for Mexico tournament tennis fans, as she came out of nowhere to upset then No. 1 seed Jelena Ostapenko at the 2024 Guadalajara event<\/a>. Guadalajara and Merida do feature similar court conditions, and Stakusic\u2019s well-rounded game could be a tough task for Yastremska. However, despite the Ukrainian\u2019s up-and-down 2026 form, Stakusic is yet to win a tour-level match since last September. The seeded Yastremska should win this.<\/p>\n

Prediction: Yastremska in 2<\/p>\n
