Jimmy Kimmel voiced his support for the U.S. women\u2019s hockey team after they declined President Donald Trump\u2019s reluctant invitation to his State of the Union address.<\/p>\n
The comedian weighed in on the athletes\u2019 snub during Monday night\u2019s monologue for \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!,\u201d where he ripped into Trump for his odd phone call with the U.S. men\u2019s hockey team following their gold medal win at the Olympics.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo Trump dials in after the game, Kash [Patel] has got him on his phone to glom onto the glory,\u201d Kimmel said, \u201cand invite the men\u2019s team and begrudgingly the gold medal winning women\u2019s team, who also won in overtime, to his State of the Union tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n
After playing a snippet of the phone call, in which Trump said he had to invite the female athletes or risk being \u201cimpeached,\u201d Kimmel blasted the president as a \u201ccreep,\u201d but made sure to also shout out the women\u2019s team for their response to the drama.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe women\u2019s hockey team, by the way, immediately refused the invitation,\u201d he continued. \u201cI mean, can you blame them? The last time Trump invited a woman with a medal to the White House, he made her give it to him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kimmel, of course, was referring to Venezuelan opposition leader\u00a0Maria Corina Machado<\/a>, who gifted Trump her Nobel Peace Prize<\/a> after the arrest of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n Though, as Kimmel highlighted, the women\u2019s team took the high road, noting in a statement: \u201cWe are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal winning U.S. women\u2019s hockey team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement. Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the games, the athletes are unable to participate. They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgement.\u201d<\/p>\n Yet, as Kimmel noted, that was seemingly \u201ca nice way of saying, \u2018Puck off, Trump.
