{"id":487721,"date":"2026-02-24T13:59:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T13:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/487721\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T13:59:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T13:59:08","slug":"northeast-us-digs-out-from-brutal-snowstorm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/487721\/","title":{"rendered":"Northeast US digs out from brutal snowstorm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Neighbors, government workers and a powerful railroad snow-clearing machine nicknamed \u201cDarth Vader\u201d scrambled to dig out much of the northeastern United States from a brutal and \u2014 in some areas \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/photo-gallery\/snowstorm-snow-cold-winter-726d2574c843811aafe5fcbe65d82eab\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record-breaking storm<\/a> that blanketed the region with snow and resulted in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/winter-storm-flight-cancellations-us-travel-54feed6ca0fb8e05c3b59326bd7ff24c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of flight cancellations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But as the snow moved northward and tapered off in other areas Tuesday, forecasters warned that another storm could be right around the corner.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s storm that meteorologists are calling <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/snow-weather-noreaster-snowfall-records-blizzard-northeast-aff4424880506264d7828b39faaee008\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the strongest in a decade<\/a> dumped more than 2 feet (61 centimeters) of snow in parts of the Northeast. More than 3 feet (91 centimeters) fell in Rhode Island \u2014 surpassing snow totals from the historic Blizzard of 1978 that struck the Northeast, the National Weather Service said.<\/p>\n<p>By Tuesday morning, roads were beginning to reopen, mass transportation was coming back online in some cities and power had returned for some of the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-east-coast-winter-storm-blizzard-c32d60af1f146359664d6688a2dcdada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds of thousands who had lost electricity<\/a> in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Delaware and Rhode Island.<\/p>\n<p>Amtrak canceled some trains between Boston and New York and between New York and Philadelphia on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Some schools reopening while others stick with online learning<\/p>\n<p>In New York City, which canceled classed Monday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that schools would reopen for in person learning on Tuesday, raising questions about how feasible that is with snow still piled along sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella said school should remain closed, while Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, described the situation as \u201ca big mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s going to be low attendance of students. You\u2019re going to have low attendance of staff because people don\u2019t know if they can travel, if they can get to schools,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespersons for Mamdani didn\u2019t respond to an email seeking comment but his schools chief, Chancellor Kamar Samuels, said in a post on X, that they were \u201cconfident in our decision to reopen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia switched to online learning Monday and Tuesday. Districts on Long Island and elsewhere in the New York suburbs said they would cancel school again Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Another storm is on the way<\/p>\n<p>The weather service said it\u2019s tracking another storm that could bring more snow to the region later this week. A combination of rain and snow is expected Wednesday, with up to a couple of inches of possible snow.<\/p>\n<p>While the new storm is not expected to be as strong, even a few extra inches of snow on top of hard-hit areas could make cleanup more difficult, said Frank Pereira, meteorologist for the weather service in College Park, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny additional snow at this point is probably not going to be welcome,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bomb cyclone cancels thousands of flights<\/p>\n<p>The weather service referred to Monday\u2019s storm as a \u201cclassic bomb cyclone\/nor\u2019easter off the Northeast coast.\u201d A <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/winter-snow-bomb-cyclone-3de11481ad49fc94bafb570467a2f972\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bomb cyclone<\/a> happens when a storm\u2019s pressure falls by a certain amount within a 24-hour period, occurring mainly in the fall and winter when frigid Arctic air can reach the south and clash with warmer temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>More than 2,000 flights in and out of the United States were canceled Tuesday, according to the flight tracking website <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">FlightAware<\/a>. Most of the cancellations involved airports in New York, New Jersey and Boston. <\/p>\n<p>Rhode Island\u2019s T.F. Green International Airport paused its airport operations Monday as it dealt with nearly 38 inches (97 centimeters) of snow, according to the Weather Service, breaking a record of 28.6 inches (72.6 centimeters) set in 1978. The pause continued through Tuesday morning as the airport assessed conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Central Park in New York City recorded 19 inches (48 centimeters) of snow. Warwick, Rhode Island, exceeded 3 feet (91 centimeters), topping the nation so far. The highest wind gust of 84 mph (135 kph) was recorded in Montauk Point, New York.<\/p>\n<p>New York, Philadelphia and other cities, as well as several states, declared emergencies. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boston-globe-not-printing-blizzard-308125075384641529d615f31d9ff14b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Boston Globe<\/a> management called off printing its daily newspaper for the first time in its more than 150-year history because snow and winds kept staff from safely getting to its printing plant, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/02\/23\/business\/boston-globe-not-print-noreaster-snow\/?event=event12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the newspaper said<\/a> in an article on its website.<\/p>\n<p>Christa Prince and two others were out in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon with shovels and an electric snowblower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just making a path for this car,\u201d Prince said. \u201cIt\u2019s not our car but you know, we\u2019re just doing our neighbor a kind deed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Izaguirre reported from Albany, New York and Rush reported from Portland, Oregon.
