NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Oscar-nominated screenplay writer and \u201cYellowstone\u201d<\/a> co-creator Taylor Sheridan<\/a> has written about crime and violence so often that he decided to work on a book about an ordeal he has never endured: life behind bars.<\/p>\n

Simon & Schuster announced Tuesday that Sheridan\u2019s \u201cHow to Not Die in Prison,\u201d a \u201cdarkly funny survival guide\u201d to a maximum-security facility, will come out June 23. Sheridan is a best screenplay nominee for the 2016 crime drama \u201cHell or High Water,\u201d and has overseen such TV series as \u201cYellowstone,\u201d \u201cTulsa King\u201d and \u201cMayor of Kingstown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might wonder what in the world gives me the knowledge or wisdom to write a survival guide to prison,\u201d Sheridan writes in the book\u2019s introduction, according to Simon & Schuster. \u201cWell, I\u2019ll tell you \u2014 absolutely nothing. I\u2019ve never been to prison. But, like every man, I\u2019ve certainly wondered how I would survive if circumstances ever put me there. That morbid curiosity sent me on a journey to understand the politics and dangers of prison.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheridan did receive some firsthand input. His co-author is Tom Nelson, who spent more than a decade in prison.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, one of us has written hit TV shows and Academy Award-nominated movies, and the other has spent much of his adult life behind bars in medium and maximum-security prisons,\u201d Nelson said in a statement. \u201cIf that\u2019s what makes for good wisdom and entertainment, I\u2019ll take it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheridan\u2019s other film credits include writing and directing the Angelina Jolie<\/a> thriller \u201cThose Who Wish Me Dead\u201d and the Western-thriller \u201cWind River,\u201d starring Jeremy Renner<\/a> and Elizabeth Olsen<\/a>.
