{"id":488293,"date":"2026-02-24T21:03:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T21:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/488293\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T21:03:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T21:03:08","slug":"more-companies-seek-refunds-from-us-after-trump-tariffs-ruled-illegal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/488293\/","title":{"rendered":"More companies seek refunds from US after Trump tariffs ruled illegal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FedEx is suing the U.S. government, the latest company to request a refund on what it paid for tariffs set by President Donald Trump last year after the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-tariffs-trump-0485fcda30a7310501123e4931dba3f9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Supreme Court<\/a> ruled that the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-supreme-court-refunds-imports-a90ebe598b888832c68ca5ab03a88521\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs are illegal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 companies have filed suit in the U.S. Court of International Trade in efforts to recoup costs from the illegal tariffs, including large U.S. corporations like Costco and Revlon. Most of the lawsuits were already in process ahead of the Supreme Court decision Friday.<\/p>\n<p>FedEx said in a filing with the U.S. Court of International Trade that they have \u201csuffered injury\u201d from having to pay the tariffs and that the relief they\u2019re seeking from the court would redress those injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Meyer, a law professor at Duke University, said each case is likely to have to be tried individually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to wait and see how the government decides to handle the refund claims,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then if the government chooses not to set up a process for the refunds, ultimately the Court of International Trade is going to have to adjudicate over a thousand cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Retail Federation said in a statement on Friday that the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling provided certainty for U.S. businesses and manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge the lower court to ensure a seamless process to refund the tariffs to U.S. importers,\u201d it said. \u201cThe refunds will serve as an economic boost and allow companies to reinvest in their operations, their employees and their customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/us-supreme-court\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Supreme Court<\/a> struck down President Donald Trump\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-economy-liberation-day-d3458da225c1fdfade97ed494b23e868\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">far-reaching global tariffs<\/a> on Friday. Trump said he was \u201cabsolutely ashamed\u201d of some justices who ruled 6-3 against him, calling them \u201cdisloyal to our Constitution\u201d and \u201clapdogs.\u201d At one point he even raised the specter of foreign influence without citing any evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The court\u2019s ruling found tariffs that Trump imposed under an emergency powers law were unconstitutional, including the sweeping \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs he levied on nearly every other country. <\/p>\n<p>The Treasury had collected more than $133 billion from the import taxes the president has imposed under the emergency powers law as of December, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">federal data<\/a> shows. The impact over the next decade has been estimated at some $3 trillion. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/libertystreeteconomics.newyorkfed.org\/2026\/02\/who-is-paying-for-the-2025-u-s-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">A study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New Yor<\/a> k found U.S. businesses and consumers are paying nearly 90% of the tariffs that Trump has imposed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has vowed to collect tariffs through other means. He reached for a stopgap option immediately after his defeat Friday at the Supreme Court: Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 15% for up to 150 days.
