After dealing with a secret medical condition for years, PGA star Max Homa<\/a> finally decided to get honest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI just looked at it as, \u2018I hope this just goes away someday,\u2019\u201d Homa, 35, exclusively told Us Weekly of his experience with seborrheic dermatitis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that results in itchy, flaky patches he\u2019s been dealing with since high school. The golfer said as a young adult he simply tried to ignore the irritating symptoms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope my scalp stops flaking, I hope my face stops getting red, I hope I stop being itchy,\u201d Homa, who spoke to Us via his partnership with Arcutis, added. \u201cTwenty years later, I realized I probably waited long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homa credited his wife, Lacey, with inspiring him to get proactive about his health.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife nudged me to go to a dermatologist, and when I did, I got diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis,\u201d he recalled. \u201cI had always just thought it was just some simple thing, and when I actually saw it was something that is chronic. I realized that, \u2018Oh, I need some form of topical medicine.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Homa was prescribed Zorvye, a once-daily topical foam, and then approached by Arcutis to be a spokesperson for the biopharmaceutical company\u2019s Free to Be Me campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be lying if I said it was just an automatic yes,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI was quite embarrassed that other people were going to know about this. I\u2019ve been trying to hide it forever, and then I realized, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re all going through some stuff, might as well maybe help the next person.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Tina Bhutani, a board-certified dermatologist, told Us that seborrheic dermatitis can manifest in other ways if\u00a0 left untreated.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can go into other areas like the face, the beard area, sometimes in the ears, on the chest, on the back, so it can definitely become a lot more visible in places where you can\u2019t really hide it anymore,\u201d Bhutani explained. \u201cAnd then also it can be itchy, it can be painful, it can be symptomatic, so it\u2019s really important to remember that this truly is a skin disease, it\u2019s not just a cosmetic concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to taking care of his physical health, Homa opened up about his mental health, which is routinely tested during a grueling PGA season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI work on it all the time. I\u2019m still not great at it,\u201d Homa said of his headspace. \u201cYou just try to continue to evolve. I think that\u2019s kind of the point. Hopefully, one of these days, I\u2019ll have it kind of handled.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cYou gotta keep yourself in check. There\u2019s been weeks where I\u2019ve done a great job and I\u2019m very proud of myself. I think what I resonate with is \u2014\u00a0 and I\u2019ve talked to my psychologist and my coach about this \u2014 the weeks, even when I don\u2019t win, but when I feel like I did a really good job mentally, I am so proud of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homa said he\u2019s been able to use his two sons \u2014 Cam, 3, and Austin, 6 months \u2014 as motivation to keep him on track if he ever feels himself faltering.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt kind of goes back to my little boys,\u201d Homa explained. \u201cIf my son ever tried to play a professional sport, or really do anything, at the end of every day, I\u2019d just be like, \u2018Did you try really hard, and were you in a good state of mind? Did you do all the things you could control?\u2019 And if he said, \u2018Yeah,\u2019 I\u2019d say, \u2018Then eff everything else.\u2019 That\u2019s all you can do. Let\u2019s move along and be proud of ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI definitely have been working on trying to control what I can control and throw the outcome out the window. It\u2019s so much easier said than done, but that has been the goal for the last couple months.\u201d<\/p>\n
