Gene Gallagher has reflected on supporting his father Liam<\/a> with Villanelle<\/a>, admitting that he \u201cdidn\u2019t know what he was doing\u201d.<\/p>\n

The band opened for Liam<\/a> on his solo \u2018Definitely Maybe\u2019 UK and Ireland tour in 2024<\/a>, alongside Cast<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0The View<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Villanelle recently spoke to Radio X<\/a>, ahead of releasing their debut EP \u2018Measly Means\u2019<\/a> in May. Host Dan O\u2019Connell asked them whether touring with the Oasis<\/a> frontman had felt like a \u201cbaptism of fire\u201d, compared to their later support slots<\/a> with Miles Kane<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was more locked in for Miles than \u2018Definitely Maybe\u2019,\u201d Gene responded. \u201c\u2018Definitely Maybe\u2019, like, I didn\u2019t even know what I was doing. I didn\u2019t even know what a tour was, or how to do it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Guitarist Ben Taylor added: \u201cI mean, \u2018Definitely Maybe\u2019 was as far as being thrown into the deep end as you could possibly be. I\u2019d say even now we wouldn\u2019t be ready for a tour that big.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gene agreed: \u201cI don\u2019t think anyone ever really is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor continued: \u201cYeah, but it was one of those where we were as ready as we could have ever been. But in terms of the Miles tour, we went in with, I think, a lot more conviction.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the EP is done, we know what we are as a band far more than we ever did on the \u2018Definitely Maybe\u2019 tour. As amazing as that was, I think we had a lot more purpose on this [latest] tour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gene went on to admit that he \u201ccouldn\u2019t sleep the night before\u201d Villanelle\u2019s first set on Liam\u2019s trek. \u201cIt was so unknown to me. I put on a brave face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of his \u2018Definitely Maybe\u2019 tour kicking off, LG denied claims of nepotism and shared footage of Villanelle playing live<\/a>. \u201cIs it fuck he\u2019s my son it\u2019s what you do,\u201d he wrote at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve given many opportunities to many young bands over the years it\u2019s what you do if you can now it\u2019s VILLANELLES turn if you don\u2019t like it FUCKOFF [sic].\u201d<\/p>\n

Liam had previously described Gene\u2019s music<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cin your face,\u00a0Arctic Monkeys<\/a>\u00a0style\u201d, compared to his brother Lennon, whose music was more \u201cspaced out, like early Verve, pretty chilled\u201d.<\/p>\n

Gene has also performed with his dad in on Later\u2026 with Jools Holland<\/a>, and recorded some bongos on the track \u2018One Of Us\u2019<\/a> from Liam\u2019s second solo album \u2018Why Me? Why Not.\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking to NME last autumn<\/a>, Gene discussed the influence of seeing\u00a0the Oasis\u00a0Live \u201925\u00a0reunion tour<\/a>. His cousin \u2013 Noel<\/a>\u2018s daughter Anai\u0308s \u2013 had said earlier that she\u2019d attended 12 Oasis gigs in a row<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been to the most out of all the kids<\/a>! I\u2019ve been to well over 12,\u201d Gene told us. \u201cI\u2019ve done like, Toronto, Chicago, both New Yorks.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

When asked whether his father and uncle\u2019s massive performances had inspired him in terms of what was possible with Villanelle, he replied: \u201cDefinitely. It makes you want to pick up a guitar straight away. It lights the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

The band told NME that they had a \u201cgenuine passion and drive to bring back rock music again\u201d, describing their sound as \u201cthis mix of grunge, shoegaze, punk and alternative rock\u201d.<\/p>\n

Villanelle have since featured in the NME 100<\/a>, which spotlights all the essential emerging artists for 2026. They shared the single \u2018Placebo\u2019<\/a> earlier this month, following on from the songs \u2018Hinge\u2019<\/a> and \u2018Measly Means\u2019<\/a>. Their debut EP arrives on May 6.<\/p>\n

The group have numerous live shows scheduled for this summer, including slots at The Great Escape<\/a>, Neighbourhood Weekender<\/a>, Governor\u2019s Ball<\/a>,\u00a0Bonnaroo<\/a>,\u00a0Mad Cool<\/a>, and Boardmasters<\/a>. Visit\u00a0here<\/a> for tickets.<\/p>\n
