{"id":491983,"date":"2026-02-26T17:06:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T17:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/491983\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T17:06:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T17:06:18","slug":"running-ultra-marathons-may-harm-your-blood-cells-study-warns-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/491983\/","title":{"rendered":"Running Ultra-Marathons May Harm Your Blood Cells, Study Warns : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pushing the body towards ultra-marathon distances can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/red-blood-cells-play-a-much-greater-role-in-our-immune-system-than-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">red blood cells<\/a> to be less flexible, potentially impacting their ability to deliver oxygen and remove waste throughout the body, a new study shows.<\/p>\n<p>Although the study didn&#8217;t look at long-term health implications, there are reasons to believe that hitting our biological limits in this way may be harmful \u2013 something that has been hinted at by <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/CH-211121\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earlier research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The international team of researchers behind the new study think it might be a stress and repair problem: that the pressures of running ultra-marathon distances exceed our innate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stem-cells-repair-brain-damage-caused-by-stroke-in-mice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recovery abilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is something red blood cells are particularly vulnerable to, as they lack a nucleus and can&#8217;t repair themselves by making new proteins. However, the researchers stop short of recommending against taking part in these runs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t have guidance as to whether people should or should not participate in these types of events,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cuanschutz.edu\/news-stories\/ultra-endurance-running-may-accelerate-aging-and-breakdown-of-red-blood-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> biochemist and molecular geneticist Travis Nemkov, from the University of Colorado Anschutz (CU Anschutz) in the US.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we can say is, when they do, that persistent stress is damaging the most abundant cell in the body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study involved 23 elite runners competing in either the Martigny-Combes \u00e0 Chamonix race (40 kilometers or about 25 miles \u2013 slightly shorter than a marathon) and the Ultra Trail deMont Blanc race (171 kilometers or about 106 miles long \u2013 an ultra-marathon).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/RaceRunning.jpg\" alt=\"Race running graphic\" width=\"642\" height=\"292\" class=\"wp-image-193145 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Blood samples from runners of two different races were analyzed. (Nemkov et al., Blood RCI, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>Nemkov and colleagues measured levels of a host of different biomarkers in blood samples collected from athletes before and immediately after the race.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, red blood cells showed damage from a variety of causes, including mechanical (from physical strain) and molecular (from internal chemical changes).<\/p>\n<p>Generally, these signs of damage are associated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-identify-how-young-blood-reverses-aging-in-human-skin-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faster aging<\/a> and breakdown of red blood cells. However, the wear and tear on those cells was notably greater in those runners who completed the longer distance.<\/p>\n<p>One of the significant changes was red blood cells becoming more inflexible. That potentially limits their ability to get around the body and can lead to a drop in blood cells as stiffer ones are cleared out \u2013 and this was observed only in the ultra-marathon runners.<\/p>\n<p>Another difference at the longer distance was that one of the red blood cell repair strategies, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1042\/bst20210579\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Lands cycle<\/a>, went into overdrive \u2013 with chemical markers indicating it couldn&#8217;t keep up with the body&#8217;s demands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767618732_248_Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At some point between marathon and ultra-marathon distances, the damage really starts to take hold,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cuanschutz.edu\/news-stories\/ultra-endurance-running-may-accelerate-aging-and-breakdown-of-red-blood-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Nemkov.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve observed this damage happening, but we don&#8217;t know how long it takes for the body to repair that damage, if that damage has a long-term impact, and whether that impact is good or bad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As ever, it&#8217;s important to give context around the results: This is a relatively small sample of runners, and there were other differences between the two race types besides length (including pace, elevation, and conditions).<\/p>\n<p>That means there&#8217;s no proof of direct cause and effect here, and any conclusions have to be balanced against other research.
