\n\tFormer \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d star Eric Dane died<\/a> on Feb. 19, one week ago \u2014\u00a0and in Thurday\u2019s episode of the long-running ABC drama, the show paid tribute to him and to his character, Dr. Mark Sloan, in a video at the end of the episode. The 65-second-long McSteamy montage was set to Tommee Profitt & Fleuries\u2019 cover of Snow Patrol\u2019s \u201cChasing Cars,\u201d a song that was made iconic after being used in the show\u2019s Season 2 finale when Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) died and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) wouldn\u2019t let go of him. Different versions of \u201cChasing Cars\u201d have been used on \u201cGrey\u2019s\u201d and in its promos ever since to great effect, always to underscore an emotional event. \n\tDane joined the cast of \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d in Season 2, playing a plastic surgeon and a ladies\u2019 man \u2014\u00a0Mark, nicknamed McSteamy, was the best friend of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) whose affair with Derek\u2019s wife Addison (Kate Walsh) had broken up that marriage. Mark Sloan proved to be a popular character, and Dane became a series regular in Season 3. He died during Season 8, after a bunch of the hospital\u2019s doctors were in a plane crash. Nevertheless, Dane appeared in a few more times on the show, including with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) in Season 19 when she was in a hallucinatory state from COVID, and characters who had died on the show visited her.<\/p>\n

\n\tDane was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis\u00a0in 2025; despite his terminal illness, he played an ALS patient on NBC\u2019s \u201cBrilliant Minds\u201d<\/a> in the fall, and completed filming Season 3 of \u201cEuphoria,\u201d on which he played Cal Jacobs. \u201cEuphoria\u201d will premiere on HBO on April 12.<\/p>\n

\n\tDane\u2019s death prompted an outpouring of grief from his colleagues at \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy,\u201d from creator Shonda Rhimes to Heigl to Walsh and beyond, all of whom wrote loving tributes to him<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe video, with \u201cChasing Cars\u201d playing, begins with Mark\u2019s earliest appearances, when he referred to himself and Meredith as the \u201cdirty mistresses\u201d through his becoming a father. Mark\u2019s advice to Jackson (Jesse Williams) from his deathbed plays over a montage: \u201cIf you love someone, you tell \u2019em, even if you\u2019re scared that it\u2019s not the right thing. Even if you\u2019re scared that it will burn your life to the ground, you say it. You say it loud.\u201d<\/p>\n
