Recreating colors artificially is an entirely different challenge\u2014one with some unexpectedly high stakes.<\/p>\n<p>Practically anything human-made is of a certain color thanks to artificial pigments, or chemical compounds that appear a specific color. An ongoing challenge is that, as chemical bonds naturally fade, so does the color. This won\u2019t be an issue for most painting tasks, but for more high-quality products like Ferraris, preventing this loss of color can get seriously costly.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s the color red, which, for structural reasons, is generally difficult to achieve in chemistry. For practical purposes, therefore, the most difficult color to artificially create is a brilliant and durable shade of red\u2014one that can withstand time and natural forces. Hence, a \u201cperfect red.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A recent New Scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2514410-the-worlds-most-elusive-colour-is-worth-billions-if-we-can-find-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> profiled Mas Subramanian, a material scientist at Oregon University who discovered a novel type of artificial blue. Now, Subramanian is trying to arrive at the perfect red. The profile, which I highly encourage you to read, brings renewed attention to pigment chemistry\u2014a research field that, despite its importance across countless industries, remains oddly enigmatic.<\/p>\n<p>To put this in perspective, \u201cmany companies\u201d have reportedly told Subramanian that cracking the code for the perfect red pigment would make him a billionaire. Indeed, in pigment chemistry, not all colors are created equal\u2014and the reason comes down to some easily overlooked, yet very cool, science.<\/p>\n<p> The chemistry of hues <\/p>\n<p>Color emerges from the way light interacts with electrons inside molecules. When light strikes a molecule, it powers up the electrons, making them jiggle up to a higher energy level. But these transitions depend on the physical structure of the molecule, as these geometries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/scientists-say-pigment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regulate<\/a> which wavelengths of light are absorbed and reflected.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, in pigment chemistry, finding the right element isn\u2019t as important as identifying which arrangement gives off the desired color. For instance, what gives emeralds and rubies their respective green and red colors is the same element, chromium, just with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwstout.edu\/about-us\/news-center\/why-are-rubies-red-and-emeralds-green-their-colors-come-same-metal-their-atomic-structure\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">different atomic arrangement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, colors were \u201cdiscovered\u201d more organically, as ancient artists landed on color recipes combining minerals, animal fats, etc., to create paints and inks. One famous example is <a href=\"https:\/\/exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu\/ancient-color\/blue.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Egyptian blue<\/a>, which ancient Egyptians manufactured using sand, sodium carbonate, and copper or bronze shavings.<\/p>\n<p> A chemist\u2019s color hack <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2000727190 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/YInMn_Blue-336x281.jpg\" alt=\"Yinmn Blue\" width=\"336\" height=\"281\"  \/>An image of YInMn Blue as synthesized in the laboratory. \u00a9 Mas Subramanian via Wikimedia Commons <\/p>\n<p>Subramanian\u2019s claim to fame was the discovery of \u201cYInMn Blue,\u201d which is as close as one gets to a \u201cperfect\u201d blue (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorhexa.com\/0000ff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hex code #0000ff<\/a>). Fascinatingly, the pigment\u2019s structure\u2014a distorted double pyramid\u2014is intentionally asymmetrical, which scales back quantum rules that forbid electrons from jumping between particular energy levels.<\/p>\n<p>These discoveries have huge practical applications. Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2018-quest-for-billion-dollar-red\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a> that the right chemistry allows manufacturers to \u201ccreate the blue in velvet, silk, cotton, rayon, or coated paper stock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just the color,\u201d Pressman added. \u201cIt\u2019s the chemical composition of the color. And can that composition actually be realized in the material I\u2019m going to apply it to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p> The billion-dollar pigment <\/p>\n<p>If you have even an inkling of interest in art history, you probably know that red is definitely not \u201crare\u201d in paintings. Heck, the earliest known painting <a href=\"https:\/\/humanorigins.si.edu\/research\/whats-hot-human-origins\/earliest-discovered-cave-painting\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had<\/a> streaks of red. But none of these are \u201cperfect\u201d reds, in the sense that organic red pigments are chemically fragile and fade too easily.<\/p>\n<p>And in 2020, the NSF <a href=\"https:\/\/chemistry.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/2020\/04\/chemist-famous-for-historic-discovery-of-blue-pigment-receives-nsf-award-to-look-for\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gave<\/a> Subramanian a $200,000 grant to find a solution. The chemist hasn\u2019t gotten there yet, although he and his team allegedly achieved a \u201creddish-magenta\u201d and other orangish colors. To New Scientist, Subramanian explained that electron transitions between the relevant energy levels \u201crarely yield a clean, bright red.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team has also played around with semiconductor additions that also absorb light. But Subramanian admitted that they are still \u201csomewhat playing the dice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As someone fairly well-versed in art and color theory, I found YInMn Blue to be absolutely beautiful. The distinction between different shades of the same color might seem trivial, but I genuinely couldn\u2019t identify an existing color (in the realm of artificial pigments) with the same brilliance. Not only that, it\u2019s meant to be usable in everyday products!<\/p>\n<p>So personally, I\u2019m really looking forward to the pleasant surprise that\u2019s in store with \u201cperfect red.\u201d I hope they find the right atomic recipe in my lifetime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Seeing a color in nature is one thing.
