Travel is for everyone. Or rather should be. Cities, landmarks, natural parks and other destinations across the United States are increasingly making their spaces accessible for all. Meet some of the top spots to visit, all of which have adapted to offer equal access or were designed with inclusivity top of mind.<\/p>\n

With its \u201cdramatic\u201d canyons and colorful rock formations, Badlands National Park offers visitors gorgeous views of \u201cstriking\u201d landscapes, said Travel and Leisure<\/a>. It also provides them with plenty of accessible spaces, starting with the Ben Reifel Visitor Center<\/a>, which has ramp entrances, accessible movie theater seating and bathrooms, tactile exhibitions and captioned and audio-described versions of the park\u2019s informational film.<\/p>\n

Multiple viewpoints on Badlands Loop Road have accessible parking and paths. A park highlight is the Fossil Exhibit Trail, a \u201cshort, accessible\u201d route showcasing the \u201cunique geology and fossil history\u201d of the Badlands, said WheelchairTraveling.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The National Park Service is doing its part to improve support for \u201cneurodiverse travelers\u201d with \u201csocial stories, sensory guides and staff who can respond to families\u2019 needs by suggesting calm spots or less-crowded trails,\u201d said Afar<\/a>. U.S. citizens and residents with medically documented permanent disabilities can also receive a gratis America the Beautiful Access Pass<\/a>, which gives them lifetime free entrance to recreation areas managed by the National Park Service, Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.<\/p>\n

This is a historic center, but when it comes to accessibility, Boston is thoroughly modern. Over the last several years, the city has worked with advocates<\/a> to make attractions easier to visit and compile lists of accessible hotels for quick reference<\/a>. Boston\u2019s subway and trolley system<\/a> is inching closer to becoming fully accessible and now has low-floor buses in its fleet and additional elevators being installed in stations. Even The Freedom Trail<\/a>, featuring American Revolution sites, is accessible; it is recommended visitors use a power wheelchair to go over the cobbled streets and up hills.<\/p>\n

During a recent visit to Boston, travel blogger Cory Lee from Curbfree with Cory Lee<\/a> was \u201cpleasantly surprised\u201d by how effortless it was to get around in his wheelchair. From the top of the View Boston<\/a> observation deck, Lee enjoyed \u201cgorgeous\u201d views of the city, and at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum<\/a> he was \u201cimpressed\u201d by the \u201cstep-free entry and accessible pathways throughout,\u201d plus the \u201cinteractive experience\u201d of throwing faux tea crates overboard. His \u201cspacious\u201d suite at the waterfront Boston Harbor<\/a> hotel had meaningful touches, like a bed with a removable box frame, in case a guest needed it lowered. This kind of \u201cflexibility is rare,\u201d Lee said, and \u201cincredibly helpful for wheelchair users with different transfer needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

This beach<\/a> north of San Diego<\/a> is \u201cone of the country\u2019s most accessible stretches of sand,\u201d said Travel and Leisure. An access mat is available throughout the year, allowing wheelchair and scooter users to cross the sand, and visitors can also borrow beach wheelchairs on a first-come, first-served basis. These chairs have large wheels that keep them from sinking and are not meant to go into the water.<\/p>\n

Morgan\u2019s Wonderland and Morgan\u2019s Inspiration Island, San Antonio, Texas<\/p>\n

Every aspect of Morgan\u2019s Wonderland<\/a>, the world\u2019s first \u201cultra-accessible\u201d theme park, was thoughtfully planned to \u201censure no one feels left out,\u201d said Southern Living<\/a>. The 25 attractions and shaded playgrounds can be enjoyed by \u201cguests of all ages and abilities,\u201d with rides like the wheelchair-accessible Joy\u2019s Happy Swing and Rocket\u2019s Sky Flight Adventure, a four-seater zip line over the park\u2019s lake. On a hot summer day, plan to spend time at Morgan\u2019s Inspiration Island<\/a>, a water park<\/a> with elaborately themed splash pads, a river boat ride and waterproof wheelchairs. Tickets for both parks are free for individuals with disabilities or special needs.<\/p>\n

As the first state to be named \u201caccessibility verified\u201d by Wheel the World<\/a>, Oregon leads the way in letting travelers know ahead of their journeys about accessible hotels, activities, attractions and transportation. Wheel the World collected \u201cover 200 specific data points\u201d at each location, said The Oregonian<\/a>, such as \u201cbed height, bathroom features and doorway measurements\u201d at hotels. Wheel the World then posts these details on its online platform, acting as an \u201cExpedia for people with disabilities,\u201d said Joy Burns, the communication and partnership manager for the company.<\/p>\n

Travel Oregon also launched a statewide grants program to help \u201cfund projects that make travel experiences more inclusive,\u201d like the installation of more than 600 feet of nonslip wheelchair-accessible mats on pathways through Kiyokawa Family Orchards<\/a> in Mount Hood. These make it easier to navigate the orchard and its parking lot, and also benefit visitors with other mobility aids and baby strollers.<\/p>\n

At the Smithsonian\u2019s 21 museums<\/a>, \u201caccessible options and resources are front and center,\u201d said Smithsonian Magazine<\/a>, from \u201cwheelchair accessible exhibitions and entrances\u201d to \u201copen captioning on videos and media experiences.\u201d The National Museum of Natural History, for example, offers visual description tours that are \u201cessential\u201d for helping people who are blind or have low vision navigate areas \u201cteeming with objects and specimens.\u201d These narrations are extremely detailed, not only describing the objects but also the \u201clevels of light in the halls\u201d and \u201cmurals lining the display cases.\u201d<\/p>\n

During Morning at the Museum<\/a> events, the facilities open early for neurodivergent kids, teens, young adults and their families. This gives attendees \u201caccess to quiet and darkened spaces\u201d and the chance to participate in educator-developed sensory-based activities. Advance registration is required.<\/p>\n
