{"id":494549,"date":"2026-02-27T23:43:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T23:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/494549\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T23:43:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T23:43:12","slug":"americans-losing-economic-confidence-over-rising-us-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/494549\/","title":{"rendered":"Americans losing economic confidence over rising US debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/poll\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">poll<\/a> has revealed that voter confidence in the country\u2019s economic trajectory is plummeting, as more Americans say lawmakers must address the ballooning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/national-debt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">national debt<\/a> or risk deepening the nation\u2019s inflationary struggles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">On Thursday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgpf.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter G. Peterson Foundation<\/a>\u2014nonpartisan economic think tank\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgpf.org\/press\/2026-2-fci-press-release\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed that 90 percent of voters<\/a> are concerned that America\u2019s $38-trillion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/debt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debt<\/a> is worsening the country&#8217;s cost-of-living difficulties, with 85 percent believing this has contributed to higher borrowing costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">As a result, the group\u2019s \u201cFiscal Confidence\u201d index slipped to 48 in February from 50 in January, further from the neutral benchmark of 100 and down from 62 this time last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">\u201cStabilizing the debt should be a core issue for any leader who wants to improve affordability and economic growth,\u201d said Michael A. Peterson, CEO of the Peterson Foundation. \u201cVoters understand that rising debt puts upward pressure on inflation and interest rates, and they are calling on candidates\u2014and even looking across party lines\u2014for solutions during this campaign season.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why It Matters<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/budget\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Budget<\/a>\u00a0deficits and America\u2019s mounting debts have long been on the radar of economists and fiscally hawkish lawmakers, given the implications for economic growth and borrowing costs, as well as taxes and inflation if the government takes drastic measures to pare these down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">These concerns were heightened following the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/new-big-beautiful-bill-proposed-as-deficit-soars-under-trump-11356361\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passage of the &#8216;One Big Beautiful Bill Act<\/a>,&#8217; signed into law by President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0in July and containing both spending increases and sweeping\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/tax-cuts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tax cuts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/donald-trump-warning-sign-economy-us-voters-11327476\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">surveys are showing <\/a>that the crisis could hold electoral consequences, with 72 percent of those polled by the group saying they would consider supporting a candidate from outside their usual party \u201cif that candidate has a clear plan to address the debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What To Know<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Based on its online poll of 1,004 registered voters, conducted in mid-February, the group found bipartisan support for addressing America\u2019s mounting fiscal challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Fears over the inflationary impacts of the debt were highest among Democrats at 96 percent, though Republicans (87 percent) and Independents (85 percent) were nearly as concerned over the effects on prices for goods and services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">And 83 percent (including 84 of Democrats, 86 percent of Republicans and 78 percent of Independents) said whether a political candidate has a plan to address the national debt would be a \u201cdeciding factor\u201d when casting a vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Meanwhile, 79 percent agreed that addressing the debt should be a top-three priority for the president and Congress.<\/p>\n<p><img id=\"11591556\" alt=\"\" caption=\"A view of a bus shelter at Pennsylvania Avenue and 22nd Street NW where a poster displays the current U.S. National debt on October 28, 2025 in Washington, DC.\" credit=\"Jemal Countess\/Getty Images for the Peter G. Last week, Republicans on the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee (JEC)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jec.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/republicans\/newsroom?ID=5E0F9EF1-8242-4584-B755-DB58234F505B\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">released a statement\u00a0<\/a>calling to attention the &#8220;unsustainable&#8221; and &#8220;immoral&#8221; levels piling up under successive governments, and said this was &#8220;threatening the economic future of our children and grandchildren.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;We continue to hit new record highs for our national\u00a0debt, exacerbating an already economic threat our nation faces,&#8221;\u00a0said Arizona Representative and JEC Chairman David Schweikert. &#8220;In this fiscal year alone, we have added more than $1 trillion, bringing the total to $38.647 trillion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">This followed a report published by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO)\u00a0earlier this month, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/61882#:~:text=In%20CBO%27s%20projections%2C%20the%20federal,and%20moderates%20in%20later%20years.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warned\u00a0<\/a>that deficits will push the amount of debt held by the public from nearly $31 trillion today to $56 trillion by 2036, with debt also increasing to 120 percent of GDP over this period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The Peter G. Peterson Foundation said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/62050\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">these findings were <\/a>&#8220;an urgent warning to our leaders about America\u2019s costly fiscal path.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What People Are Saying<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Michael A. Peterson, CEO of the Peterson Foundation, said: \u201cKitchen table cost-of-living issues are taking center stage this election year, and voters see that America\u2019s rising national debt is making their own lives more costly. Whether it\u2019s their car loans or grocery bills, Americans are rightly concerned about inflation, and the growing federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/deficit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deficit<\/a> is only making things worse.
