Ten Long Island hospitals ranked among the best in the state, according to a new report.<\/a><\/p>\n

They\u00a0made up one-third of the 30 hospitals ranked as New York\u2019s best by the national magazine Newsweek and Statista, a data firm, which rated 800\u00a0hospitals across the country for quality, reputation, and\u00a0patient experience and outcomes.<\/p>\n

The high rankings come as demand for health care\u00a0grows as Long Island’s population ages, Newsday reported.<\/a> Rankings can help patients evaluate a hospital’s reputation and safety, but experts cautioned that consumers should look at many factors when picking a hospital.<\/p>\n

Of the\u00a010 hospitals, seven are run by New Hyde Park-based Northwell Health, including\u00a0North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, Glen Clove Hospital and Huntington Hospital. All of those hospitals also made Newsweek’s\u00a02025 list.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ten Long Island hospitals ranked among the best in the state, according to a new report from Newsweek and Statista.<\/p>\n

The high rankings come as demand for health care\u00a0grows as Long Island’s population ages.<\/p>\n

Rankings can help patients evaluate a hospital, but experts cautioned that consumers should look at several factors.<\/p>\n

This year’s list also included\u00a0Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, both part of the Northwell system, and\u00a0St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown.<\/p>\n

Stony Brook University Hospital and St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson also made the cut this year and on Newsweek’s 2025 list.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A representative for Stony Brook University Hospital did not respond to a request for comment. A\u00a0representative for\u00a0St. Charles and St. Catherine declined to comment.<\/p>\n

Newsweek and Statista scored\u00a0hospitals using data collected between 2024 and 2025 from\u00a0hospital accreditation organizations, the federal Medicare and Medicaid programs and a nationwide survey of medical professionals, according to Newsweek’s report.<\/p>\n

North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center \u2014 two Northwell hospitals \u2014 ranked third and fifth, respectively, out of the 30 New York State hospitals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peter Silver, senior vice president and chief quality officer for Northwell Health, credited the company\u2019s practice of\u00a0looking at internal hospital data and comparing it to national benchmarks each month to improve safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an expectation among Long Islanders and all New Yorkers that the health care they receive is the highest quality,\u201d Silver said. \u201cThat\u2019s our drive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

How to judge the rankings<\/p>\n

Rankings can be a helpful starting point for consumers looking to research hospital quality, but they shouldn\u2019t be a patient\u2019s only consideration, said Patricia Kelmar, a senior director of health care campaigns with U.S. PIRG, a consumer advocacy group.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She cautioned that all rankings are based on historical data, and that hospital conditions \u2014 like how busy an emergency room is \u2014 change by the day. Kelmar encouraged consumers to do a deeper dive by looking at ratings<\/a> from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which lets users drill down into specific topics, such as maternal health.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese general rankings don\u2019t serve you well in figuring out what you think is most important,\u201d Kelmar said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Consumers should also look at Leap Frog\u2019s ratings<\/a>, which focus on patient safety and are more user friendly than the federal Medicare and Medicaid ratings, said Elisabeth\u00a0Benjamin, vice president for health initiatives at the Community Service Society of New York.<\/p>\n

She cautioned that general rankings incorporate factors that matter less to patients,\u00a0like a hospital\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe top priority from the patient\u2019s perspective should be safety,\u201d Benjamin said.<\/p>\n

Demand for health care rises<\/p>\n

The rankings come\u00a0as the health care industry grows on Long Island and nationally, as the Baby Boom generation ages. The health care and social assistance\u00a0industry, which includes home care workers,\u00a0employed 263,611 people in the third quarter of 2025, a 27% increase compared with a decade ago, said Shital Patel, principal economist at the New York State Department of Labor’s division of policy, strategy and research.<\/p>\n

\u201cGenerally, older adults spend more on health care which drives up demand for health care services and more workers to meet that demand,\u201d Patel said.<\/p>\n

Hospital networks on Long Island have expanded as well. Northwell, which employs roughly 57,000 people on Long Island,\u00a0completed a\u00a0merger<\/a>\u00a0with Connecticut-based Nuvance in 2025 to become the largest not-for-profit health care system in the Northeast, Newsday reported.\u00a0Melville-based independent health care network\u00a0Allied Physicians Group also grew last year<\/a>\u00a0after acquiring\u00a0two pediatric offices in Lynbrook and Elmont in June, Newsday reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ten Long Island hospitals ranked among the best in the state, according to a new report.
