DENVER (AP) \u2014 Renee Good loved sparkles and laughter and any excuse for a celebration. She loved pretty much everyone she met, and was late for pretty much everything. <\/p>\n
\u201cShe had this way of making you feel special and loved that I didn\u2019t even understand that until we lost her,\u201d Donna Ganger said Friday of her daughter, who was shot and killed<\/a> by an immigration officer during the federal crackdown in Minneapolis. <\/p>\n She was \u201cslow to anger, quick to love, quick to care,\u201d said her father, Tim Ganger. \u201cThat\u2019s the essence of who she was.\u201d<\/p>\n Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was killed Jan. 7 as immigration agents surged through the Minneapolis area, sparking waves of protests. Her death and that of another U.S. citizen, Alex Pretti<\/a>, just weeks later sparked outrage across the country and calls to rein in<\/a> immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n In a wide-ranging interview in Colorado, where some of the family lives, Good\u2019s parents and two of her brothers, Brent and Luke Ganger, talked to the AP about the joy Good found in life, their grief at losing her and their hopes that her death can bring some sort of change in a deeply polarized nation. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s going to be hard in the future,\u201d Donna Ganger said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be kind of a constant pain.\u201d<\/p>\n Settling in Minneapolis<\/p>\n Good, who graduated from college later in life, was volunteering in a local school district and working as a substitute teacher when she was killed, her parents said.<\/p>\n \u201cShe was working so hard to get her education, and then she was finally able to use it, and I could just tell how happy she was and how fulfilled,\u201d Donna Ganger said. <\/p>\n Good, her 6-year-old son and her partner Becca Good \u2014 the women were not legally married, according to a family lawyer, but referred to one another as wives \u2014 had only recently relocated to Minneapolis from Kansas City, Missouri, settling in a quiet residential street in a tight-knit neighborhood known for its progressive activism. <\/p>\n In social media accounts, Renee Good described herself as a \u201cpoet and writer and wife and mom.\u201d On Pinterest, a profile picture shows her smiling and holding a young child, alongside posts about tattoos, hairstyles and home decorating.<\/p>\n The family \u201csettled very quickly into the community in Minneapolis,\u201d said Donna Ganger, describing how the neighborhood had also welcomed the rest of the family when they came after the shooting. They see that as the result of the love that Good had showed her new neighbors.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was incredible to receive that back,\u201d Luke Ganger said.<\/p>\n Donna Ganger held a stuffed, toy owl as she spoke, a gift from her daughter, who knew how much she loved the birds. It had sparkles on its feet, a reminder of Good\u2019s love for glitter.<\/p>\n At Good\u2019s memorial service, a table of glitter had been set out for guests. Donna Ganger had put a piece on a lens of her glasses and it\u2019s remained there. <\/p>\n \u201cShe just kind of sparkled all the way through,\u201d said Donna Ganger. \u201cI think of her and I look down and see my little sparkle.\u201d<\/p>\n An American blend<\/p>\n The family is \u201ca very American blend,\u201d Luke Ganger said recently in testimony to Congress. \u201cWe vote differently, and we rarely completely agree on the finer details of what it means to be a citizen of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n Yet \u201cwe have always treated each other with love and respect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n On Friday, the family didn\u2019t want to discuss the specifics of their differences, but Donna Ganger said she\u2019d long prayed for guidance: \u201cBefore all this happened I said \u2018Make me a wise woman.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n In the hours after Good\u2019s death, Trump administration officials said she had been shot as she tried to drive her car into an immigration officer. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Good had committed \u201can act of domestic terrorism.\u201d <\/p>\n But as details of the confrontation emerged, and criticism of the crackdown began growing, administration comments softened.<\/p>\n President Donald Trump said he\u2019d been told that Tim Ganger had supported him. <\/p>\n \u201cHe was all for Trump, loved Trump. And, you know, it\u2019s terrible,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cI hope he still feels that way.\u201d<\/p>\n Tim Ganger declined to talk about his political affiliation or whether it had changed with his daughter\u2019s killing.<\/p>\n \u201cI think I\u2019m just going to leave that go,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s so many other important things,\u201d to deal with now. <\/p>\n But family members said they hoped their ability to get along would be an inspiration. <\/p>\n \u201cOur purpose through this whole tragic, difficult, unbelievable time, is to have something good come out of this,\u201d Tim Ganger said. \u201cOtherwise the senselessness of this is overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n Sadness echoed in Donna Ganger\u2019s voice as she talked about navigating family differences. <\/p>\n \u201cSometimes I\u2019m just silly, you know, and I joke with them and I\u2019m goofy,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I want to be able to talk about hard things \u2014 and that\u2019s hard sometimes with your own family to talk about hard things that maybe you don\u2019t agree on. And I don\u2019t want there to be any hardships between us or hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBut it\u2019s important that we learn to be careful with our words, but share them in a deep way,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really important.\u201d<\/p>\n Family members only spoke in general ways about the change they\u2019d like to see come from Good\u2019s death.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s evident that something is broken, right?\u201d said Brent Ganger. \u201cAnd when something is broken, you have to take a deep look to see what it is that can be changed and fixed in order for it to not happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n The morning of the shooting<\/p>\n On the morning of the shooting, as immigration raids and protests were flaring across the city, Becca Good has said they stopped their car in the street to support neighbors during an immigration operation. <\/p>\n
