The good news is, a boatload of those rare exceptions is about to show up at once, courtesy of Mobile World Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The tech industry\u2019s biggest mobile show may not quite have the clout it once did, when the likes of Samsung, Sony, LG, and HTC showcased new flagships there each year, but it still attracts more phone launches than CES does two months earlier. It\u2019s especially popular with the Chinese manufacturers who are still fighting for space in the global market, along with niche manufacturers who turn up with extra-durable \u201crugged\u201d devices, or battery beasts that are more power bank than phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">This year\u2019s biggest event is expected to be Xiaomi\u2019s launch on Saturday. Ever eclectic, it\u2019s teased tablets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/884330\/xiaomi-ultra-thin-magnetic-magsafe-power-bank-5000-qi2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">super-slim power banks<\/a>, earbuds, and smart trackers among its MWC lineup, but all eyes will be on the Leitzphone. This collaboration between Xiaomi and Leica takes the former\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/850599\/xiaomi-17-ultra-leica-edition-zoom-ring\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Xiaomi 17 Ultra<\/a> \u2014 follow-up to one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/phone-review\/621670\/xiaomi-15-ultra-review-camera-periscope-price-specs-price\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">absolute best cameras in any phone last year<\/a> \u2014 and slaps a rotating camera ring on the back, allowing you to physically scroll through the continuous optical zoom the phone\u2019s telephoto provides. The company has already revealed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/883816\/honor-magicpad-4-android-16-tablet-oled-ultra-thin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MagicPad 4<\/a> \u2014 apparently the thinnest fully fledged tablet around \u2014 and teased its next-generation foldable phone, also expected to be the world\u2019s thinnest. But much more exciting than either is what the company promises will be a proper look at its so-called Robot Phone, first teased late last year in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/799944\/honor-robot-phone-tease-announcement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concept video<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/854407\/the-robot-phone-is-realish\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shown in static prototype form<\/a> at CES last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">From what we\u2019ve seen, it\u2019s certainly more phone than robot, but the gimbal-stabilized camera arm that unfolds out of the phone\u2019s back is undeniably novel. It\u2019s like a cross between a smartphone and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24152949\/dji-osmo-pocket-3-opinion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DJI Osmo Pocket<\/a>, with teasers hinting at AI features and a cheery, WALL-E-esque sense of character. Expect to see more from Nothing, which is launching its Phone 4A series and a new pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nothing\/status\/2026959799296954788\" rel=\"nofollow\">over-ear headphones<\/a> at its own event on March 5th, but is almost certain to tease more details on both over the next few days. Image: Dominic Preston \/ The Verge<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">For MWC, none of this is entirely new. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/gadgets\/625232\/mwc-2025-xiaomi-nothing-samsung-display-foldables\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We declared<\/a> last year\u2019s show \u201call about the odds and ends,\u201d with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/623765\/xiaomi-realme-camera-concepts-modular-lens-mwc-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">modular smartphone camera lens attachments<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/622775\/realme-phones-change-color-in-europe-now-too\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">color-changing designs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/622899\/dsfd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oversize smartphone speakers<\/a>. The year before gave us our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/26\/24082729\/samsung-has-big-ambitions-for-the-galaxy-ring\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first proper look at the Samsung Galaxy Ring<\/a>, we got to try a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/25\/24083130\/a-phone-that-bends-over-backwards-for-you\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Motorola concept phone<\/a> that bent round your wrist into a bracelet, and saw some unusual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/gadgets\/879652\/samsung-galaxy-s26-privacy-display-ad-flex-magic-pixel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">privacy tech from Samsung Display<\/a> that launched in the Galaxy S26 Ultra this week, two years on. The products that we know are coming probably only scratch the surface of how weird and wonderful MWC 2026 is likely to get, as the mobile industry gets its freak on for a few days in the name of securing just a little of your precious attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq2 _1xwtict9\">When you\u2019re competing with Apple for attention, playing it safe won\u2019t get you very far <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">And you can\u2019t blame them, not least when Apple has waded in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/885238\/apple-march-new-ipad-mac-iphone-17e-event\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promise its own week of announcements<\/a> starting\u2026 Monday, the same day that MWC officially kicks off. In true Apple fashion, we don\u2019t know for sure what\u2019s coming, but affordable MacBooks and the midrange iPhone 17E have both been heavily tipped. When you\u2019re competing with Apple for attention, playing it safe won\u2019t get you very far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I\u2019m at least half a cynic when it comes to these outlandish hardware announcements. The ones that you can actually buy are often little more than gimmicks, and the ones you can\u2019t usually feel like no more than marketing stunts. But in the past 10 days, we\u2019ve had the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/880400\/pixel-10a-hands-on-a-little-too-much-like-pixel-9a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pixel 10A<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/884239\/samsung-galaxy-s26-plus-price-specs-gemini\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Galaxy S26<\/a> in quick succession, both minimal upgrades that lean on fractional spec bumps and AI additions to justify their existence. I wouldn\u2019t hold my breath for next week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/875454\/iphone-17e-launching-soon-magsafe-a19\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone 17E<\/a> to revolutionize much either.
