{"id":496519,"date":"2026-03-01T00:10:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-01T00:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/496519\/"},"modified":"2026-03-01T00:10:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T00:10:11","slug":"expert-warns-iran-cornered-by-existential-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/496519\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert warns Iran cornered by \u2018existential war\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Former IDF intelligence official Yossi Kuperwasser said Iran now views the conflict as an existential war, warning the regime is likely to escalate and use all military and proxy capabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The current conflict with Iran will only become more severe as the Islamic regime now understands that it is in an \u201cexistential war\u201d threatening its continued rule, Brig.-Gen. (res.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-843862\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Yossi Kuperwasser;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Yossi Kuperwasser<\/a>, head of the Jerusalem Institute of Strategy and Security and former head of IDF military intelligence research, told The Jerusalem Post on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is the beginning. I expect more attacks on the leadership of the Islamic regime, its ballistic missile capabilities, nuclear and military industry facilities, and security forces, mainly thy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/strikes-cia-assessed-khamenei-replaced-180449382.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:IRGC;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IRGC<\/a>,\u201d he warned the Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIran is going to use all its capabilities, as this is an existential war for it. In addition to Israel, they are trying to hit American targets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While other experts had initially predicted in discussions with the Post that the US would conduct a limited strike as a means to pressure Iran into signing a nuclear agreement, Kuperwasser told the Post that this operation is \u201cto help pave the road for the Iranian people to topple the regime and take over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/iranians-celebrate-israeli-us-strikes-132748149.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Protests;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Protests<\/a> have broken out in recent months across Iran over the country\u2019s financial crisis, and the regime\u2019s brutal human rights violations against demonstrators have led to renewed calls for regime change from both outside and within the country.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/912ffc689125453c9216551f84d1b4f1.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Thousands have been killed and detained, with Human Rights Watch warning last week that many more have \u201cdisappeared\u201d to secret facilities where they face torture, extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, and starvation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhat the people of Iran do now will be an important indicator of their success,\u201d he said, noting that now is an opportune time for the Iranian people to dismantle the regime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While the Iranian people may now continue their push for new governance, Kuperwasser warned that there are those who will use diplomatic or terrorist influence to try to protect the Islamic regime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cChina and Russia are going to exert a diplomatic effort to allow the Islamic regime to stay in power,\u201d he predicted, \u201cbut [they] are not expected to get involved militarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Possible&#8217; Iran\u2019s proxies could join the war<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On the military side, Kuperwasser said it was \u201cpossible\u201d that Iran\u2019s proxies in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/hezbollah-signals-support-iran-without-184551814.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Lebanon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lebanon<\/a> and Yemen would join the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIran is doing what it can to encourage them to,\u201d he shared. \u201cWe, of course, hope that\u2019s not the case and are doing whatever we can to ensure this doesn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hezbollah announced on Wednesday night that the terror organization would refrain from joining a war or attack on Former Israeli deputy national security adviser Prof. Chuck Freilich, now an adjunct professor at Tel Aviv University and Columbia University, told the Post last week that the Lebanese terror group \u2013 founded on the ideology of velayat-e faqih (Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist) \u2013 is loyal to Khamenei, binding his position as the authority on the group\u2019s future role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While Iran may have pressed to see Hezbollah join the conflict, two years of war, a Lebanese disarmament campaign, and the fall of the Assad regime in Syria have left the terror group significantly weakened and thus somewhat reluctant to rush into another battle against the Jewish state unless absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While Bahraini analyst Dr. Ahmed Alkhuzaie earlier told the Post that he suspected the Islamic regime would only give a proportional response to the Saturday morning American and Israeli strikes, when reapproached by the paper, he confirmed his assessment had changed significantly over the past few hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019ll be a hell of a fight that [will] affect everyone in this part of the world,\u201d he warned, in a noticeably different tone than earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIran will utilize its proxies in the region, that is for sure. The impact will vary since, to the Islamic Republic, this war is existential. That\u2019s why we see Hezbollah, Islamic militias in Iraq and Yemen are on full alert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran &#8211; must not be equated with Syria or Lebanon<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Alkhuzaie warned that Iran \u201cmust not be simplistically equated with Syria or Lebanon, because its infrastructure and state apparatus are far more developed and resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While the Assad regime fell quickly, he explained that this was the result of years of civil war that fractured its institutions, whereas the Islamic Republic has maintained a \u201crelatively intact and functioning system of governance, with nationwide networks of transportation, energy, and industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The regime is \u201cless vulnerable to collapse under external pressure,\u201d as its financial systems are more robust than Syria\u2019s, even with Western sanctions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Similarly, the Iranian political landscape is not politically fragmented like Lebanon\u2019s, which has meant that it is not \u201cparalyzed by [the same] sectarian divisions and weak state institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIran operates through a centralized, hierarchical bureaucracy that enforces policy across its territory. Ministries, agencies, and provincial administrations in Iran are tightly integrated into the state structure, ensuring continuity even during crises,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis bureaucratic depth gives Iran the ability to mobilize resources, coordinate responses, and sustain long-term strategies in ways Lebanon cannot. Misreading this capacity could lead to catstrophic miscalculations in policy or intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The blend of ideological authority with institutional control in Iran\u2019s political hierarchy will also help the regime maintain \u201ccohesion and discipline across the state,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is fundamentally different from the fragmented militias and external dependencies that characterize Syria and Lebanon.
