\n\tMaggie Gyllenhaal<\/a> discussed her experience directing her brother, actor Jake Gyllenhaal<\/a>, in her forthcoming Gothic romance movie The Bride!<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a sprawling discussion with The New York Times<\/a>, she explained, \u201cI waited until I was absolutely sure that asking him to do this part in the movie \u2014 it\u2019s a pretty small part, it\u2019s just a cameo, really \u2014 I made sure, I really did some work in thinking to make sure it was the right thing to do to ask him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Lost Daughter filmmaker described \u201ctearing up\u201d while broaching the subject with her sibling, adding with a laugh that she \u201cwaited too long \u2026 that was a rookie mistake.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt meant so much to me,\u201d she added, given that she strived early on in her career to distinguish herself from her filmmaker father, screenwriter mother and fellow performer brother. She said she and the Brokeback Mountain star have \u201cnever been estranged but we\u2019ve never been as close as we are now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in the interview, Maggie Gyllenhaal described her fascination with envy and having felt some latent feelings of jealousy toward her brother\u2019s early movie stardom.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn general, I am very interested in envy. I think there\u2019s a reason why it\u2019s a seven deadly sin. I\u2019m interested in it in terms of watching other people\u2019s movies come out. Admiration versus envy. What creates it? I think it\u2019s usually feeling starving, like you don\u2019t have enough,\u201d she said, while also noting that taking a beat to reach out to Wuthering Heights director Emerald Fennell \u201cfree[d] the competition up and you realize: \u2018No, no. We\u2019re actually 100 percent on the same team. There absolutely is enough to go around.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe concluded, \u201cI don\u2019t think I knew that at first, when I was young and Jake was a movie star right away. I don\u2019t think I was in touch with the envy, but it was there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Bride! \u2014 due in theaters March 6 \u2014 stars\u00a0Jessie Buckley\u00a0(in the title role), Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard (also Maggie Gyllenhaal\u2019s spouse),\u00a0Annette Bening\u00a0and\u00a0Pen\u00e9lope Cruz.
