{"id":498382,"date":"2026-03-02T00:27:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T00:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/498382\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T00:27:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T00:27:08","slug":"oil-prices-are-rising-sharply-after-us-and-israeli-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/498382\/","title":{"rendered":"Oil prices are rising sharply after US and Israeli attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Oil prices rose sharply when market trading began Sunday, as <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/launched a major attack on Iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran<\/a> and retaliatory strikes against Israel and U.S. military installations around the Gulf sent <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-strait-hormuz-us-protests-persian-gulf-db7159d715453977279ab9cfd918e6e4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disruptions through the global energy supply chain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Traders were betting the supply of oil from Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East would slow or grind to a halt. Attacks throughout the region, including on <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/us-israel-strikes-iran-khamenei-03-01-2026#0000019c-a994-dfc5-adbd-ad9fd8300000\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, have restricted countries\u2019 ability to export oil to the rest of the world. Prolonged attacks would likely result in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-israel-iran-strikes-oil-prices-4a4a800739e53a30ff63b5e89e84ad71\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">higher prices for crude oil<\/a> and gasoline, according to energy experts. <\/p>\n<p>West Texas Intermediate, the light, sweet crude oil produced in the United States, was selling for about $72 a barrel Sunday night, up around 8% from its trading price of about $67 on Friday, according to data from CME group.<\/p>\n<p>A barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, was trading at around $79 per barrel Sunday night, according to FactSet, up about 8% from its trading price of $72.87 on Friday, which had been a seven-month high at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Higher global energy prices could lead to consumers paying more for gasoline at the pump and shelling out more for groceries and other goods, at a time when many are already <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/consumers-inflation-economy-4cf2b9b627cc3ad1bbf6c31f77d27a02\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">feeling the impacts of elevated inflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 15 million barrels of crude oil per day \u2014 about 20% of the world\u2019s oil \u2014 are shipped through the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/what-to-know-about-strategic-straight-of-hormuz-ap-explains-b7883bdeeea8497b8d239e967510e24d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, making it the world\u2019s most critical oil chokepoint, according to Rystad Energy. Tankers traveling through the strait, which is bordered in the north by Iran, carry oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE and Iran. <\/p>\n<p>Iran had temporarily <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-strait-hormuz-us-protests-persian-gulf-db7159d715453977279ab9cfd918e6e4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shut down parts of the strait<\/a> in mid-February for what it said was a military drill, which led oil prices to jump about 6% higher in the days that followed.<\/p>\n<p>Against that backdrop, eight countries that are part of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/opec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the OPEC+ oil cartel <\/a> announced they would boost production of crude Sunday. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, in a meeting planned before the war began, said it would increase production by 206,000 barrels per day in April, which was more than analysts had been expecting.
