It usually takes months to build up to the sort of angst we saw all over MLS on Matchday 2, with a couple of nasty rivalry clashes and some tangible urgency to book results.<\/p>\n
And nowhere was that more the case than in the Florida Derby, as Orlando City<\/a> and Inter Miami CF<\/a> treated us to an instant classic on Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire.<\/p>\n Keen observers of Lionel Messi<\/a>\u2019s storied FC Barcelona era will recall that the GOAT produced some of his most iconic Bar\u00e7a moments in El Cl\u00e1sico, their showdowns with their eternal rivals Real Madrid. And Matthew Dos Santos<\/a> \u2013 the left back Bradley promoted from their MLS NEXT Pro<\/a> side in preseason \u2013 again surpassed expectations, as did his 21-year-old teammate on the opposite corner, Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty<\/a>, who\u2019s looking like a very savvy pickup from CF Montr\u00e9al<\/a>.<\/p>\n “As we moved through preseason,\u201d said Bradley of Hall and Mehmeti postgame, \u201cit was more and more clear every day that both of these guys needed to be on the field.<\/p>\n \u201cThey’ve shown how good they are.\u201d<\/p>\n This weekend\u2019s action also underlined how impressive RBNY\u2019s Matchday 1 road win at Orlando really was: It\u2019s one of only four away wins IN TOTAL across the season\u2019s first two weeks.<\/p>\n Also, did you pick Hall as a Golden Boot presented by Audi contender? If so, go buy a lottery ticket, Nostradamus, because you\u2019re one of the only people on earth who could\u2019ve guessed the teenage homegrown would be the league\u2019s early scoring co-leader with three goals in two matches.<\/p>\n It wasn\u2019t just the Red Bulls playing the kids to good effect. The Colorado Rapids<\/a> shook off a rough opening loss at Seattle Sounders FC<\/a> with a deserved 2-0 home win<\/a> over the\u00a0Portland Timbers<\/a>, in which 18-year-old center back Lucas Herrington<\/a> grabbed the spotlight.<\/p>\n The Australian bagged a game-clinching goal to open his MLS account and was clean with the ball (96% completion rate on his 70 passes) and tidy in his defensive work, on a day when a heavily deflected early goal from Hamzat Ojediran<\/a> provided the hosts with a useful leg up and veteran goalkeeper Zack Steffen<\/a> added a couple of huge saves.<\/p>\n The theme continued one state over in Utah, where shorthanded Real Salt Lake<\/a> had to field three teenagers in their starting XI for a visit from the battle-tested Sounders<\/a> \u2013 and emerged victorious because of, not despite, their young\u2019uns.<\/p>\n Aiden Hezarkhani<\/a>, 18, scored his first career goal after good work from fellow homegrowns Zavier Gozo<\/a> and Luca Moisa<\/a>. Then Gozo teed up 21-year-old Australian Ariath Piol<\/a> for what stood up as the game-winner in a 2\u20131 victory<\/a> despite a large push from Cristian Roldan<\/a> & Co.<\/p>\n It was the best-case scenario for a Claret-and-Cobalt squad waiting on USMNT<\/a> midfielder Diego Luna<\/a> to return from a knee issue. They also got a boost as new Designated Player Morgan Guilavogui<\/a> made his club debut off the bench, looking quite lively in an 18-minute cameo: 18 touches, 11\/12 passes completed, two chances created, 3\/3 accurate long balls, 4\/5 duels won and two fouls drawn.<\/p>\n Speaking of DP debuts, another marquee signing made their bow out in San Jose<\/a>.<\/p>\n Timo Werner<\/a>, who stepped off a plane from Germany a matter of days ago, played super-sub in the Earthquakes\u2019 confident 2-0 defeat<\/a> of Atlanta United<\/a> at PayPal Park, entering the match to hit the assist that clinched the victory.<\/p>\n Right pass, right weight, right moment, even with a limited introduction to his new teammates. That\u2019s what clubs make big investments like this for.<\/p>\n The Quakes are now 2W-0L-0D, tied with LAFC<\/a> for second in the Supporters\u2019 Shield table, have a plus-5 goal differential, own a league-best 6.72 expected goals over their first two matches, and have nary a goal conceded.<\/p>\n Sure, they\u2019ve benefited from a very friendly schedule. But this looks like a well-functioning team on which Werner can slot in as an elite difference-maker rather than a hero asked to ride to the rescue, as many of us suspected he might have to.<\/p>\n The South Korean icon\u2019s movement instigated two red-card challenges from Dynamo defenders to greatly simplify the visitors\u2019 task, and central midfielders\u00a0Mark Delgado<\/a> and Stephen Eust\u00e1quio<\/a> reminded everyone of the Black & Gold\u2019s sterling supporting cast by banging home long-range goals keyed by clever set-piece plays.
