First, J.P. Crawford returns to the lineup as the designated hitter. Crawford has been dealing with a shoulder issue and will be hit-only for the remainder of the week. An 0 for 8 in early spring training is nothing to be concerned about. Nevertheless, Wilson was happy to see Young connect.

Watch: Cole Young mashes mammoth first HR of spring training

“He feels like he wasn’t in a good spot at the plate yet, but to get that pitch and drive it like that was really good to see,” Wilson said. “He’s just got a good swing, we’ve seen the power. We will just continue to give him the time he needs at second base and with his at-bats. For him, it’s just about finding that consistent contact. The rhythm and timing of it all is I think the hardest part of spring training and I think he is starting to find that as we go forward.”

• The Mariners have not just lost players to the World Baseball Classic, but also coaches. Two-thirds of the major league hitting staff has exited for the WBC with senior director of hitting strategy Edgar Martinez and assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes coaching for Puerto Rico and Mexico, respectively. Additionally, bullpen catcher Fleming Baez is working with the team from the Dominican Republic. Back in Peoria, Mariners hitting coach Kevin Seitzer has plenty of help in the cages with the Triple-A hitting staff and organizational coordinators pitching in.

• George Kirby threw a sim game at the complex Monday to keep him on turn. All reportedly went well. Luis Castillo also was at the complex to throw a bullpen.

More from Seattle Mariners spring training

• Three unexpected early standouts from Mariners camp
• See Mariners’ Cal Raleigh in his Team USA gear for World Baseball Classic
• Brendan Donovan showing he’s a ‘tremendous’ add in clubhouse
• Wyman and Bob: M’s bounce-back candidate can be ‘impact player’
• Seattle Mariners Notebook: Gilbert working on pitches; Sloan makes strong debut

Follow @shannondrayer

The Seattle Mariners are back from the first of two off days this spring training and will get…

[65
363,99
post-501688","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mlb","tag-mlb","tag-sports
["GET
