Jon Rahm\u2019s dispute with the DP\u00a0World Tour has escalated after the Spaniard accused the \u00adorganisation of \u201c\u00adextorting\u201d golfers over fines for competing on the LIV circuit. Rahm\u2019s Ryder Cup<\/a> future remains in peril with no resolution to the matter in sight, with insiders at the DP\u00a0World Tour and Europe\u2019s Ryder Cup fans baffled by his stance.<\/p>\n

Rahm incurred fines and suspen\u00adsions as a DP World (formerly European) Tour member playing on what are regarded as \u00adcompeting Saudi\u2011backed LIV events. Rahm signed for LIV in 2023<\/a> in a deal \u00adreportedly worth hundreds of \u00admillions of dollars.<\/p>\n

Rahm has appealed against those sanctions, with a \u00adhearing to come.<\/p>\n

In the meantime eight players in the same position \u2013 including his Ryder Cup teammate Tyrrell Hatton \u2013 agreed a deal with the DP World Tour, allowing them to play LIV events and remain in contention for Ryder Cup selection. Those players have paid fines and agreed to play in or publicise certain events.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like what they\u2019re doing currently with the contract they\u2019re having us sign,\u201d Rahm said. \u201cI don\u2019t like the conditions. They\u2019re asking me to play a minimum of six events and they dictate where two of those have to be amongst other things that I don\u2019t agree with.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what game they\u2019re trying to play right now but it just seems like they\u2019re using our impact in tournaments and fining us and trying to benefit both ways from what we have to offer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re extorting players like myself and young players that have nothing to do with the politics of the game. So I don\u2019t like the situation and I\u2019m not going to agree to that.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is difficult to see how such a polarised picture is resolved. Should Rahm lose his appeal, and precedent suggests he will, he faces being frozen out of Europe\u2019s Ryder Cup defence at Adare Manor next year. \u201cI respect Tyrrell\u2019s decision,\u201d Rahm said of Hatton. \u201cThat\u2019s all I have to say. He\u2019s free to make his own choice and I fully respect it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we should be able to freely play where we want and have the choice to play where we want and not be dictated what we do. Especially myself. I can\u2019t speak for others; only myself. I\u2019ve always committed to play the minimum [DP\u00a0World Tour] requirement and I think I\u2019ve played four events, including the Spanish Open, every year except one as a pro.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not going to change. I still fully intend to do that. I\u2019ll gladly pay my way to go on the Ryder Cup, not have to pay to still be a member of the DP World Tour and fulfil a commitment that I\u2019m fully willing to commit [to].\u201d<\/p>\n
