After scoring five times against West Ham on Saturday, Liverpool showed the more goal-shy side of themselves during Tuesday\u2019s dismal defeat against Wolves.<\/p>\n

The Reds breathed fresh life into their top-four challenge after thumping the Hammers, but they did not take that form into the midweek clash at Molineux.<\/p>\n

As fans have sadly become used to seeing this season, Liverpool<\/a> started slowly in the West Midlands, with legendary former captain Steven Gerrard<\/a> particularly scathing of the lack of penetration in forward areas.<\/p>\n

And you thought Szoboszlai\u2019s trim was going to be the worst thing about that half <\/p>\n

Abysmal 45 minutes of football\u2026<\/p>\n

Gerrard was in the studio for TNT Sports<\/a> on Tuesday and, just like everyone watching inside Molineux and at home, the Scouser was far from enthralled by a dismal first 45 minutes from both teams.<\/p>\n

Asked what Liverpool could do better to cause Wolves more problems, Gerrard focused on the non-existent tempo and \u2018penetration\u2019 from wide and central forward positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiverpool have really been struggling with the speed and tempo the game,\u201d said the 45-year-old.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no penetration outside or centrally. Aside from one pass from Van Dijk where the ball was a little behind Salah, Liverpool haven\u2019t looked like scoring.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need to change something at half-time, raise the tempo and the speed. Wolves have taken the space away and Liverpool are giving the ball away too easily. They\u2019ve shown nothing in that first-half.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving scored five goals at the weekend, you\u2019d expect them to be full of confidence, full of creativity, but there\u2019s been nothing of note, especially in the forward areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bluntness of Liverpool\u2019s wide areas has been particularly concerning for supporters this season, and with just one shot on target between them all evening, the much-maligned duo of Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah do not look like turning things around based on this evidence. <\/p>\n
