{"id":502997,"date":"2026-03-04T10:11:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T10:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/502997\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T10:11:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T10:11:13","slug":"zoo-seeks-publics-help-to-name-baby-spider-monkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/502997\/","title":{"rendered":"Zoo seeks public&#8217;s help to name baby spider monkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March 3 (UPI) &#8212; A Connecticut zoo announced the birth of a female black-handed spider monkey &#8212; and officials are asking the public to help name her.<\/p>\n<p>The Beardsley Zoo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beardsleyzoo.org\/press\/its-a-girl-connecticuts-beardsley-zoo-announces-gender-reveal-and-naming-contest-for-baby-black-handed-spider-monkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said the baby was<\/a> born Dec. 18 to mother Janet, who arrived at the facility in 2022.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Black-handed Spider Monkeys are native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, where they play an important role in maintaining healthy rainforest ecosystems,&#8221; the zoo said on social media. &#8220;The species faces ongoing threats from habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade, making births like this especially significant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The zoo has now launched <a href=\"https:\/\/lp.constantcontactpages.com\/sv\/yvWxLTE\/spidermonkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an online poll<\/a>, asking for the public to help name the new arrival.<\/p>\n<p>The potential names are Esperanza, which means &#8220;hope;&#8221; Mirabel, which translates to &#8220;wonderful;&#8221; and Reyna, which means &#8220;queen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Voting is open until noon Thursday.
