{"id":503369,"date":"2026-03-04T14:51:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T14:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/503369\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T14:51:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T14:51:11","slug":"the-rolling-stones-first-uk-no-1-was-a-bruce-springsteen-favorite-and-the-first-guitar-solo-he-learned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/503369\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rolling Stones&#8217; First UK No. 1 Was a Bruce Springsteen Favorite and the First Guitar Solo He Learned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When he was kid, <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/bruce-springsteen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bruce Springsteen<\/a> once used his mother\u2019s hair clips to pin his hair down flat while sleeping to match the perfect pageboy haircut of the <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/rolling-stones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Rolling Stones<\/a>\u2018 Brian Jones. \u201cI would sleep on it exactly right because I had Italian curly hair,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/articles\/9FNJXs9HzJhV6jZ4rMCKN3\/which-eight-songs-would-bruce-springsteen-take-to-a-desert-island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">revealed Springsteen<\/a>, \u201cso I would pin it down until it was as straight as Brian Jones.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Stones were foundational for Springsteen, as he started learning guitar and trying to pick up on some Keith Richards\u2019 solos. In his earliest rock and roll daydreams, he even imagined taking Mick Jagger\u2019s place in the band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fell asleep at night with dreams of rock and roll glory in my head,\u201d said Springsteen in his 2016 memoir <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/borntorun0000spri_r4p9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Born to Run<\/a>. \u201cHere\u2019s how one would go: The Stones have a gig at Asbury Park\u2019s Convention Hall, but Mick Jagger gets sick. It\u2019s a show they\u2019ve got to make; they need a replacement, but who can replace Mick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Springsteen continues, \u201cSuddenly, a young hero rises, a local kid, right out of the audience. He can front. He\u2019s got the voice, the look, the moves, no acne, and he plays a hell of a guitar. The band clicks, Keith is smiling, and suddenly, the Stones aren\u2019t in such a rush to get Mick out of his sickbed. How does it end? Always the same: the crowd goes wild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After getting kicked out of his first band, the Stones also gave Springsteen the first guitar solo he ever learned,\u201d Richards\u2019 licks on the band\u2019s 1964 cover of \u2018It\u2019s All Over Now,\u201d which became their first UK No. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Originally written by siblings Bobby and Shirley Womack and released by The Valentinos (featuring Bobby Womack) earlier in May of \u201964. (Left to right) Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, and Keith Richards.<\/p>\n<p>Telling the story of the end of a young love, \u201cIt\u2019a All Over Now\u201d was originally released with the B-side of \u201cGood Times, Bad Times,\u201d the band later released their cover of \u201cIt\u2019s All Over Now\u201d on their second album,\u00a012\u00a0\u00d7\u00a05 in 1964.<\/p>\n<p>Well, baby used to stay out all night long<br \/>She made me cry, she done me wrong<br \/>She hurt my eyes open, that\u2019s no lie<br \/>Tables turn and now her turn to cry<\/p>\n<p>Because I used to love her, but it\u2019s all over now<br \/>Because I used to love her, but it\u2019s all over now<\/p>\n<p>I put the record on, and I sat there all night until I was able to scrape up some relatively decent version of Keith\u2019s solo.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Springsteen<\/p>\n<p>Well, she used to run around with every man in town<br \/>She spent all my money, playing her high class game<br \/>She put me out, it was a pity how I cried<br \/>Tables turn and now her turn to cry<\/p>\n<p>Well, I used to wake in the morning, get my breakfast in bed<br \/>When I\u2019d gotten worried she\u2019d ease my aching head<br \/>But now she\u2019s here and there, with every man in town<br \/>Still trying to take me for that same old clown<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018It\u2019s All Over Now\u2019 held a special place for me because when I got thrown out of my first band, I went home that night and I was pissed off,\u201d shared Springsteen. \u201cI said, \u2018Alright, I\u2019m going to be a lead guitar player,\u2019 and for some reason that solo felt like something I might be able to manage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Springsteen continued, \u201cI put the record on, and I sat there all night until I was able to scrape up some relatively decent version of Keith\u2019s solo.
