With the Tigers $7.4M under the luxury tax, owner Christopher Ilitch said he would \u201cleave it to\u201d President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris to \u201cdecide if he wants to add and if he does, that\u2019s really not an issue,\u201d according to Jeff Seidel of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Ilitch, speaking ahead of the Tigers\u2019 exhibition game against Team Dominican on Tuesday in the Dominican Republic, said the \u201cmost important thing\u201d to him and Harris is to \u201censure that we give our organization and our team and our players the best chance for success.\u201d He added, \u201cIt\u2019s all about the timing and what\u2019s right for our organization and in our pursuit of a championship.\u201d Ilitch, on whether the club would make a compelling offer to keep P Tarik Skubal, said Harris is \u201calways looking to make smart baseball decisions,\u201d so \u201clet\u2019s let Scott evaluate and decide what he\u2019d like to do.\u201d But Ilitch added he hopes it is \u201cclear I want to support our team to make sure that we are a championship caliber organization.\u201d Ilitch: \u201cI\u2019m going to do everything I can to continue to support our team and make sure we\u2019re a championship-type club\u201d (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 3\/3<\/a>).<\/p>\n

TIGHT LIP: Ilitch on the possibility of missing games next season from a lockout or other labor issues said he will \u201cleave all of that to MLB.\u201d Ilitch: \u201cMLB has taken the lead on that whole process. I\u2019ve learned very early in my career not to worry about things that I can\u2019t control, so I try not to be worried about anything that\u2019s outside of my control. That\u2019s really in MLB\u2019s control and in the union\u2019s control.\u201d Ilitch said he was \u201cnot going to weigh in on\u201d a potential salary cap or other issues that are \u201cgoing to be big labor issues.\u201d He added, \u201cAgain, that\u2019s all for MLB to evaluate, to negotiate.
