\n\tWant another reason to see Project Hail Mary<\/a>?<\/p>\n

\n\tThe highly anticipated, big-budget Ryan Gosling<\/a> title somehow contains not a single shot of green\/bluescreen in the entire film.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s really saying something, considering Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi epic that\u2019s 156 minutes long.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Amazon MGM Studios<\/a> project is based on The Martian author Andy Weir\u2019s best-selling hard-science novel Project Hail Mary and tells the story of an astronaut (Gosling) on a high-stakes mission to save Earth from an interstellar disaster who encounters an alien trying to save his world from the same fate.<\/p>\n

\n\tChristopher Miller, who directed the film along with Phil Lord, told Comicbook.com<\/a> (below, with some unmistakable pride in his voice), \u201cWhat\u2019s fun about the movie is that there is no greenscreen in the movie whatsoever. Not a single green- or bluescreen was used. The whole ship was built as a set from the inside. We had a huge section of the exterior of the ship on the outside that we built. [The alien character Rocky] was really with us at all times.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd so, that\u2019s what makes it feel real and makes it feel natural,\u201d Miller continued. \u201cAnd the way that [cinematographer Greg Fraser\u2019s]\u00a0team lit [the set] with a lot of practical effects, allowed him to move the camera wherever and find these moments. Because you weren\u2019t just guessing and pointing it at where Rocky might be someday [if the character was added in postproduction]. That\u2019s what makes [the action] feel like it was captured in the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tProject Hail Mary has a reported gross budget of $248 million ($200 million after tax credits, says Puck) and represents a bit of a Hail Mary by the studio. But at a time when many sci-fi, superhero and fantasy projects are stuffed with greenscreen artificiality (not to mention our collective increasing weariness of so-called \u201cAI slop\u201d videos online), the practical nature of the film will could prove to be a selling point.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film has been receiving rather stellar early buzz<\/a>. One reporter called it \u201cprofound and profoundly moving, an absolute masterpiece of hope and humanity. It\u2019s also insanely entertaining,\u201d while another wrote the film \u201cfeels, in many ways, like a miracle of a movie. It combines the technical awe of Gravity, the problem-solving exhilaration and humor of The Martian, and the sweeping emotion of Interstellar into one film with its own unique style and charm.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe cast also includes Sandra H\u00fcller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub. Project Hail Mary\u00a0is released in theaters on March 20. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
