They aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the corn fermentation process.

The permit was issued so One Carbon Partnership could construct a well to permanently store carbon dioxide underground, which is also known as carbon sequestration. It was issued following “extensive review and public engagements,” officials said, and the EPA decided that the well met all requirements for approval.

One Carbon Partnership will be able to inject up to 450,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide every year for 30 years. This will equal about 13.5 million metric tons over 30 years.

The injected carbon will be permanently stored between 3,100 and 3,659 feet beneath the surface, officials said, and is protected by a 487-foot-thick “confining zone” made from caprock.

While One Carbon Partnership will be authorized to construct the well, they would not be authorized to start injection until they comply with specific permit requirements, including things like testing and demonstration of mechanical integrity.

The EPA evaluated the “geology of the site and confirmed that the low permeability shale will act as a barrier to fluid movement,” the EPA said in their permit fact sheet draft. This means that the zone will prevent CO2 from leaving the well, therefore protecting USDWs, or underground source drinking water.

The project is regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, which developed specific criteria to protect underground sources of drinking water from carbon dioxide stored underground.

One Carbon Partnership is required to monitor the well through the injection phase and for 50 years after the injection. This is to make sure that the stored carbon dioxide remains confined in the injection zone, and that underground drinking water sources aren’t endangered.

“Following a thorough, science-based technical review and extensive public engagement, EPA is approving this permit with stringent safeguards and long-term monitoring to protect underground sources of drinking water,” EPA Region 5 administrator Anne Vogel said. “This carbon storage project is expected to spur economic development in Randolph County by supporting local jobs and attracting private investment.”

Randolph County is approximately 80 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis.

What is carbon sequestration?

Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere to mitigate climate change.

Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere through a process called the “greenhouse effect.” While it is necessary to maintain temperatures on Earth, humans have increased greenhouse gases and caused rapid warming on Earth.

Carbon sequestration is one way to deal with CO2. The permit for Randolph County is for a class VI well. The wells will inject CO2 into deep rock formations and store it long-term.

How will it help?

Greenhouse gases are one of the biggest drivers of climate change, mainly caused by human activities.

While Hoosiers may not feel the direct impacts of climate change, there are still ways it could affect people over time.

“Higher temperatures and stagnant air will increase ground-level ozone production, worsening air quality. Reduced air quality can trigger asthma attacks or heart attacks, and cause or worsen respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses such as asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart failure,” a report from the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment said.

The EPA has approved a permit for One Carbon Partnership to store up to 450,000 metric tons of…

[47
192,79
post-504461","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science
["GET
