Schumer says ‘good riddance’ to Noem, but notes ‘deep rot’ at DHS<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Chuck Schumer was pleased by the news of Kristi Noem\u2019s removal. \u201cGood riddance,\u201d the top Senate Democrat said, while noting there is a \u201cdeep rot\u201d within her department.<\/p>\n
He refused to comment on his opinion of Mullin as a replacement, or whether he would vote to confirm the Republican senator as homeland security secretary.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not an issue of personnel, it\u2019s an issue of policy,\u201d Schumer added. \u201cI don\u2019t trust any one person being in charge of this agency, as long as Trump is president, given the policies he\u2019s espoused.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a post on Truth Social<\/a>, the president said that Noem had \u201cserved us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results\u201d, before noting that she would become the special envoy for a new security initiative.<\/p>\n Trump announced that he was nominating Republican senator Markwayne Mullin to replace Noem. The president called the Oklahoma lawmaker a \u201cMaga warrior\u201d, while Mullin said the nomination was \u201cpretty humbling\u201d.<\/p>\n Despite Trump<\/a> announcing he would replace Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary, the Senate rejected a funding bill to reopen her department. By of vote of 51-45, all Democrats<\/a> bar one blocked the legislation for a third time. They continue to demand stronger guardrails against federal immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n The president said he must \u201cbe involved in the appointment\u201d of Iran\u2019s next leader as he was in Venezuela, and dismissed the idea of the assassinated ayatollah\u2019s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, succeeding his father. In an interview with Axios, Trump said: \u201cKhamenei\u2019s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n The House is also preparing to vote on Thursday on a war powers resolution that would require Trump to seek congressional permission before continuing the war with Iran. It\u2019s the second vote in as many days, after the Senate defeated a similar measure<\/a> largely along party lines on Wednesday.<\/p>\n House Republican leadership has called for Tony Gonzales to end his re-election campaign. This comes after the House ethics committee launched an investigation into the representative\u2019s conduct, following reports that he had an extramartial affair with an aide who later died by suicide. However, she didn\u2019t discuss her role, and made no reference that she has been removed from her post as homeland security secretary.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Kristi Noem is currently speaking in Nashville, at a conference with several police chiefs from across the country.<\/p>\n She\u2019s yet to address her removal as homeland security secretary, and she hasn\u2019t received any questions about her ouster.<\/p>\n Share<\/a>Mullin wins one Democrat’s support<\/p>\n Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat who represents Pennsylvania, who also sits on the Senate homeland security committee said that he intends to vote for Mullin as DHS secretary.<\/p>\n Fetterman said that he\u2019s \u201cnot sure how many fellow Democrats\u201d would do the same \u201cbut I am AYE\u201d.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a014.49 EST<\/p>\n One quick, important, note. While Donald Trump<\/a> said that Markwayne Mullin would take over from Noem starting on 31 March, the Oklahoma senator still needs to be confirmed by the Senate.<\/p>\n The president can\u2019t simply appoint a replacement for a cabinet position.<\/p>\n Share<\/a>Democrats welcome news of Noem’s removal as DHS secretary<\/p>\n Congressional Democrats have started to react to Donald Trump\u2019s announcement that he\u2019s ousting Kristi Noem as his homeland security secretary.<\/p>\n Robert Garcia, the ranking member on the House oversight committee, responded quickly on social media: \u201cWell now we don\u2019t have to impeach her.\u201d<\/p>\n
