The Washington Capitals made their first salvo ahead of Friday afternoon\u2019s NHL Trade Deadline, dealing longtime fourth-line center Nic Dowd to the Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> for depth goaltender Jesper Vikman<\/a> and picks.<\/p>\n

While sending out the veteran Dowd signals the team is selling (the acquisition of Vikman also suggests Charlie Lindgren<\/a> may be on his way out, too<\/a>), the Capitals will not be \u201cpure sellers,\u201d according to The Athletic\u2019s Pierre LeBrun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The NHL Insider tweeted that the Capitals will try do what they\u2019ve done in past years: be both buyers and sellers. It\u2019s just left to be seen if they can pull it off.<\/p>\n

I wouldn’t label the Capitals as pure sellers despite the Dowd trade to Vegas. My understanding is that Washington is trying to do a bit of both, buying and selling, over the next 27 hours or so. Easier said than done but let’s see where the Caps end up tomorrow.<\/p>\n

The reporting comes as John Carlson<\/a>, Trevor van Riemsdyk<\/a>, and Brandon Duhaime<\/a> have seen their names enter the rumor mill, and the Capitals have been linked throughout the season to top forward talent, especially top-six wingers who have term, after missing out on Nikolaj Ehlers<\/a> over the offseason.<\/p>\n

The Capitals reportedly tried to trade for Artemi Panarin before the Olympic break<\/a>, but he was dealt to the Los Angeles Kings. Throughout the season, they\u2019ve been rumored to have interest in Jordan Kyrou<\/a>, Brayden Schenn<\/a>, Phillip Danault<\/a>, and Conor Garland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Over the past few seasons, the Capitals have mostly gone down the retooling route \u2014 both ahead of the trade deadline and during the offseason \u2014 as the team has tried to stay competitive during Alex Ovechkin<\/a>\u2018s final years in the NHL.<\/p>\n

Now, according to LeBrun, it looks like they\u2019ll try that philosophy again, hoping to both improve over the long haul and potentially battle for a playoff spot down the stretch, too.<\/p>\n
