Sure, the cosmic orange color attracted attention, and the QWERTY keyboard reminded one showgoer of his old BlackBerry. But once I picked it up, I could see why it was so popular. It\u2019s slim, light, and pocketable, and the physical keys just beg to be pressed. I felt unencumbered, which I can\u2019t say about the phone I\u2019m currently using. I didn\u2019t want to put it down, and based on the steady stream of visitors I saw at the booth, I wasn\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">As usual, MWC offered a bunch of odd and delightful ideas about phones that aren\u2019t just slabs of glass and aluminum. This year, I saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/mobile\/smartphones\/oukitel-wp630-mwc-2026-smartphone-igniter-101046023.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a phone with an electric igniter<\/a> (it wasn\u2019t working either time I tried to see it in action), a phone with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/gadgets\/887140\/honor-robot-phone-mwc-release-date-specs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a DJI Osmo-looking gimbal cam attached<\/a>, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/gadgets\/887357\/hang-on-my-cat-is-calling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">phones for pets<\/a>. Will any of these ideas prove to be winners in the long run? Probably not, but it\u2019s nice to imagine something different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">In between the oddball phones, another trend emerged in places like the Unihertz booth: phones that aren\u2019t your main phone. This isn\u2019t a brand-new idea, but the concept of a simplified device that provides a better typing experience, or gives you a little vacation from your regular phone\u2019s constant nagging, seems to be gaining momentum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">In almost every case, these are phones that could be your main phone, and Unihertz in particular has plenty of fans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/dumbphones\/comments\/1hl9bo9\/i_finally_found_my_perfect_dumbphone_the_unihertz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">using the company\u2019s existing devices<\/a> this way. The Titan Elite 2 runs Android 16, and Unihertz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unihertz.com\/pages\/new\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promises OS upgrades up to Android 20<\/a>. Watching vertical videos on the squarish 4-inch screen isn\u2019t going to be the best experience, but there\u2019s nothing to stop you from doing it. But the Elite 2 might be most appealing as a device when you don\u2019t plan on watching a lot of TikTok videos \u2014 maybe if you want to actively discourage yourself from doing so, even.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">There are a few overlapping intentions behind the secondary phone concept, but they have one principle in common: creating some space between you and your main phone. If you want to spend less time on weekends scrolling and more time reading a book, you can put your regular phone away and use a secondary phone for texting and calling, while keeping it clear of social media apps. Better yet, it\u2019s okay for secondary phones to be kinda crappy. Photo: Allison Johnson \/ The Verge<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The Titan Elite 2 will probably remind QWERTY phone fans of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/851298\/clicks-communicator-phone-blackberry-keyboard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clicks Communicator<\/a>, which debuted earlier this year at CES. The concept is almost identical, though the two devices offer different typing experiences: The Unihertz keys are squared off and situated right next to each other, shoulder to shoulder, and the Clicks keys are separated and oval in shape. Clicks explicitly advertises the Communicator\u2019s potential as a second device, one that\u2019s better optimized for typing emails and messages rather than scrolling social media. Texting, calling, and a few connected functions like calendar and navigation are basically all it can do. At the show, I spoke to Light\u2019s cofounder and CEO, Kaiwei Tang, who\u2019s been focused on creating minimalist phones for the past decade. He says that 50 percent of Light\u2019s customer base uses the phone as a primary device, while the other half treats it as a complement to their full-featured smartphone. Tang sees the demand growing, too. \u201cThe last 10 years we grew every year, even though we have zero marketing budget,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq2 _1xwtict9\">Is the answer to \u201cI want a break from my phone\u201d really\u2026 another phone?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But there\u2019s a massive elephant in this room: Is the answer to \u201cI want a break from my phone\u201d really\u2026 another phone? Is there a day when that thing is a pair of glasses, or a smartwatch, or some earbuds you control with voice? Tang sees the appeal of a screen-free device, but doesn\u2019t think it\u2019s realistic in the short term. \u201cI love voice UI,\u201d he says. \u201cI think that could be the future, but we\u2019re just not there yet.\u201d We still need discreet methods of input, he argues. A little screen you carry around seems to be the method we all landed on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Another approach is to make the minimalist phone part of your main phone. This has obvious drawbacks; if it\u2019s a focus mode or an app, there\u2019s almost certainly an easy way for you to turn it off quickly and slide back into social media-scrolling habits. Fairphone\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/phones\/762755\/fairphone-6-review-no-longer-compromise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">latest device<\/a> has an interesting take on the idea: a physical switch on the side of the phone that triggers a customizable \u201cmoment,\u201d with access only to the apps you\u2019ve specified \u2014 and only certain people who can interrupt you. You\u2019ll have heard about the RAM crisis, and just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/888354\/smartphone-manufacturer-ram-xiaomi-light-tcl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how bad it is for phone makers<\/a>. It\u2019s all but inevitable that phone prices will rise, and when one phone costs more, you\u2019d probably think long and hard about buying two. The situation is no doubt making it harder on the smaller brands trying to break into the market with something new, and it doesn\u2019t appear to be improving anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _17nnmdya _1xwtict1\">Still, folks at the companies I talked to this week didn\u2019t seem deterred. For Tang, it\u2019s his customers that keep him going. \u201cI\u2019m hopeful because my customers are mostly young,\u201d he says. \u201cMy generation \u2014 we\u2019re ruined,\u201d he adds with a laugh. \u201cThe next generation, I feel like they have better sense managing, or making decisions that change what tools they use.\u201d If he can muster up some optimism given the challenges facing
