{"id":507986,"date":"2026-03-06T21:36:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T21:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/507986\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T21:36:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T21:36:13","slug":"rare-glass-blobs-in-brazil-reveal-an-ancient-impact-but-something-is-missing-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/507986\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare Glass Blobs in Brazil Reveal an Ancient Impact, But Something Is Missing : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of glass fragments found in Brazil are traces of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/record-discovery-impact-crater-in-australias-outback-oldest-by-a-billion-years\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ancient impact<\/a> that scattered them millions of years ago, scientists have found.<\/p>\n<p>These blobs of material represent spray from melted rock that was liquefied in the impact, then rapidly cooled and hardened to form pebble-like glass objects, some the size of a pea and others as large as a golf ball, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/australian.museum\/learn\/minerals\/shaping-earth\/tektites\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tektites.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The resulting tektite <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strewn_field\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strewn field<\/a> is one of only a handful discovered to date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was very surprised!&#8221; geologist \u00c1lvaro Penteado Cr\u00f3sta of the University of Campinas in Brazil told ScienceAlert. &#8220;Tektites are a very rare material on Earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And, fascinatingly, scientists have yet to identify an accompanying impact crater.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/geraisites.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"486\" class=\"size-full wp-image-194183\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Some of the tektites collected from Brazil. (Cr\u00f3sta et al., <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1130\/G53805.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Geology<\/a>, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>Earth&#8217;s impact history is a lot murkier than that of other rocky bodies such as  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/moon\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73106\" data-postid=\"194180\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">the Moon<\/a>,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mercury\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"72978\" data-postid=\"194180\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Mercury<\/a>, and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mars\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73083\" data-postid=\"194180\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Mars<\/a>. Our home planet has tectonic, geological, and atmospheric processes that gradually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-may-have-located-an-ancient-asteroid-crater-off-the-coast-of-scotland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wear away<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-impact-crater-from-a-huge-iron-meteorite-has-been-found-under-greenland-s-ice-sheet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">obscure<\/a> the evidence that something large collided with Earth.<\/p>\n<p>One of the fingerprints of an impact can be tektites, which form when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/catastrophic-new-details-from-the-day-the-dinosaurs-died-uncovered-in-fossils\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meteorite slams into Earth<\/a> with enough force to generate temperatures high enough to melt surface rock. These molten blobs are flung into the air, solidifying as blobs of glass that can scatter far from the site of impact.<\/p>\n<p>The area covered by their spread is known as a strewn field, but they&#8217;re very rare because of how quickly the tektites degrade \u2013 they last just a few tens of millions of years, at most.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762231748_722_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The discovery story begins not with scientific fieldwork or laboratory analysis, but with a local resident of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minas_Gerais\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Minas Gerais<\/a> in Brazil. He had found one of the strange glass beads, looked up what it might be, and reached out to meteorite expert Gabriel Silva of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the photos the resident sent us looked like tektites, at first Gabriel and I were skeptical because tektites from other places, like Thailand and the Philippines, can be easily purchased online these days,&#8221; Cr\u00f3sta recalled. &#8220;Also, tektites and obsidian (volcanic glass) may look similar when seen in photos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But then a second report came in some weeks later, from another resident living about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the first. So the researchers requested some samples. Initial tests suggested the globs could be tektites \u2013 after which, of course, the only thing to do was to go to Minas Gerais in person and look for more themselves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/geraisite-field.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"649\" class=\"size-full wp-image-194181\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The known size and location of the geraisite strewn field. When the paper was published, they spanned a region 90 kilometers long in Minas Gerais \u2013 but <a href=\"https:\/\/agencia.fapesp.br\/impact-formed-glass-evidence-of-cosmic-collision-in-brazil-about-6-million-years-ago\/57205\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">since then<\/a>, new finds in the neighboring states of Bahia and Piau\u00ed have extended the known strewn field to over 900 kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>These Brazilian tektites have been called geraisites, after the state in which they were first identified.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The most exciting moments happen when we find these tektites in the field ourselves,&#8221; Cr\u00f3sta said, &#8220;and later, when we have the confirmation of their origin based on the analytical data.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Key to confirming the glass was of impact origin lay in something it barely contained: water.<\/p>\n<p>Volcanic glasses like obsidian typically contain between 700 parts per million and 2 percent water. The geraisites contained between 71 and 107 parts per million. &#8220;One of the decisive criteria for classifying the material as a tektite was its very low water content,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/agencia.fapesp.br\/impact-formed-glass-evidence-of-cosmic-collision-in-brazil-about-6-million-years-ago\/57205\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cr\u00f3sta says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767618732_248_Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tektites have a near-total absence of water because the extreme heat of an impact \u2013 far beyond what a volcano can generate \u2013 effectively boils off almost all moisture from the melted rock as it hurtles through the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Dating of argon isotopes in the tektites yielded a maximum age of around 6.3 million years, a date that could be younger if the impact site contained its own argon. Chemical and isotopic analysis of the geraisites also revealed something striking about the rocks that were melted by the impact.<\/p>\n<p>The source material was ancient continental crust \u2013 most likely granitic rocks from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A3o_Francisco_Craton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00e3o Francisco Craton<\/a>, one of the oldest and most geologically stable regions of South America.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The isotopic signature indicates a very ancient continental, granitic source rock,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/agencia.fapesp.br\/impact-formed-glass-evidence-of-cosmic-collision-in-brazil-about-6-million-years-ago\/57205\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cr\u00f3sta says<\/a>. &#8220;This greatly reduces the universe of candidate areas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Just how ancient? The rocks that were vaporized by the impact were already around 3 billion years old when the meteorite struck. They formed during the Mesoarchean era, when Earth itself was less than half its current age.<\/p>\n<p>The elephant in the room is the missing impact crater. The size and shape of the strewn field, and the identity of the geraisite source rock, should roughly indicate where the impact struck. Only three of the known tektite strewn fields have a clearly identified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-might-have-finally-found-the-crater-of-one-of-the-biggest-meteorite-crashes-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crater<\/a>. The largest strewn field is the Australasian one, and its crater is thought to be buried deep under the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers are working on reverse-engineering the properties of the impact event, adjusting for new information as it becomes available, such as the expansion of the field from 90 to 900 kilometers.
