Hilary Duff\u2019s new album Luck\u2026 or Something was born out of a need to reconnect with herself. \u201cI think that part of my wanting to make a record was coming out of having my fourth child,\u201d the 38-year-old, mom to daughters Banks, 7, Mae, 4, and Townes, 21 months, with singer-songwriter husband Matthew Koma, and son Luca, 13, with ex-husband Mike Comrie, recently told the L.A. Times<\/a>. \u201cI love motherhood, obviously,\u201d insisted Hilary. \u201cBut I think I felt really jealous that [Matthew] got to go to work every day and just be alone with his thoughts.\u201d She needed to stretch her mind, too. \u201cI\u2019m either gonna lose myself completely and just become a stay-at-home mom and wait for the phone to ring,\u201d Hilary explained of her mindset at the time. \u201cOr I\u2019m gonna go make something that moves me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The resulting album \u2014 her first in more than 10 years \u2014 reflects this new chapter she\u2019s in. \u201cEven five years ago, I wouldn\u2019t have felt comfortable to say some of the things I say on the record,\u201d she admitted in Interview<\/a> magazine, adding, \u201cYou just get to a point of not giving a f**k.\u201d While the former child star felt free being herself, she is aware she has a fan base who\u2019s known her for decades. \u201cOf course, I want people to love it and I want it to be reviewed well,\u201d the Lizzie McGuire alum added. \u201cBut at the end of the day, I\u2019m going to come back to my four kids and my husband who I\u2019m obsessed with, and we\u2019re going to close the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

For someone who already released five albums, it\u2019s surprising that Hilary admits music isn\u2019t her \u201cnatural\u201d milieu. \u201cI grew up an actor kid,\u201d she explained. \u201cI wanted to be a pop star and I did those things. But I had a child and I got divorced.\u201d (In 2014, she and NHL player Mike announced their \u201camicable\u201d split.) \u201cI was trying to navigate all these things as a very young adult, and doing music felt too forward-facing and too scary and exposed,\u201d she said. Instead, she focused on motherhood. \u201cI was like, \u2018OK, I\u2019ve got to learn how to be the best mom I can be,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cI took some acting jobs, some really random poor choices and some great choices \u2014 like taking Younger, that changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite finding success on the small screen for six seasons, Hilary was still hesitant to return to music. \u201cI wasn\u2019t ready. I didn\u2019t have the safety and the confidence to execute it like I have now,\u201d the \u201cCome Clean\u201d singer confessed. \u201cI also wasn\u2019t desperate to connect with people the way I am now. I feel this pull to share and be a part of people\u2019s lives again.\u201d<\/p>\n

That said, she had an unwelcome viral moment with Ashley Tisdale\u2019s recent essay on The Cut in which the 40-year-old accused her mom group \u2014 presumably including Hilary \u2014 of being \u201ctoxic\u201d mean girls. \u201cI felt sad. I honestly felt sad,\u201d Hilary said on the Call Her Daddy<\/a> podcast. Saying she felt \u201cused,\u201d she added, \u201cIt sucks to read something that\u2019s, like, not true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans see a new side of Hilary on the album, produced by her husband. \u201cWhether it\u2019s about abandonment or anxiety or feeling insecure in your relationship or being cheated on or feeling like you don\u2019t recognize yourself anymore in motherhood \u2014 that\u2019s just what life is at this age,\u201d she explained of the mature themes. Her song list reflects that. \u201cWe Don\u2019t Talk\u201d addresses her estrangement from sister Haylie Duff while \u201cHoliday Party\u201d is about a recurring dream in which Matthew cheats on her with her friends. \u201cRoommates\u201d is the song that has everyone talking, however. In it, she sings about missing the raunchy good times at the beginning of a relationship. \u201cI don\u2019t want the end \/ Want the part where you say \u2018Goddamn\u2019 \/ Back of the dive bar, give you h**d.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not what people are used to hearing from a former teen star (she clarified she\u2019d never actually performed oral sex at a bar), but Hilary isn\u2019t a teen anymore. And with age comes\u2026 experience. \u201cMy whole twenties, sex was not always enjoyable \u2014 it was so much to figure out,\u201d she told the Times. \u201cNow I finally understand it. Maybe that\u2019s a female thing, but I\u2019m not ready to be put out to pasture.\u201d Even if people have trouble reconciling that image with the woman she is now. \u201cPeople come up to me all the time and they\u2019re like, \u2018Wow, you aged really well,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018I\u2019m only 38! Just because you\u2019ve known me since I was 9\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
