<\/a>Four people killed in Beirut hotel strike<\/p>\n

At least four people were killed when an Israeli strike hit an apartment in the Ramada hotel building in central Beirut early on Sunday, with Israel saying it targeted Iranian commanders operating in the Lebanese capital.<\/p>\n

The attack marked the first Israeli strike in the heart of Beirut since Israel-Hezbollah hostilities resumed last week, and prompted fears the scope of Israel’s strikes would expand outside areas where Hezbollah has traditionally operated.<\/p>\n

Israel said it targeted key commanders of Iran’s elite Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards but did not name them.<\/p>\n

“The commanders of the Quds Force’s Lebanon Corps operated to advance terror attacks against the state of Israel its civilians, while operating simultaneously for the IRGC in Iran,” the Israeli military said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Lebanon was pulled into the widening US-Israel war with Iran on Monday after the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah fired rockets and drones into Israel. Israel responded with heavy strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon and near Beirut.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump said the war may only end with Iran\u2019s military and rulers wiped out, as Tehran moved on Sunday towards picking a new supreme leader.<\/p>\n

After Mr Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One he was not interested in negotiating an end to the conflict that has roiled oil markets, hurt business and snarled global travel, US ally Israel announced fresh strikes across Iran that it said had hit critical fuel storage sites.<\/p>\n

“At some point, I don’t think there will be anybody left maybe to say, ‘We surrender,'” Mr Trump said.<\/p>\n

The clerical body charged with choosing Iran’s next supreme leader could meet as soon today to name a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an attack early in the conflict, Iranian media reported.<\/p>\n

A majority consensus over the successor has more or less been reached, said assembly of experts member Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqeri, according to the Mehr news agency.<\/p>\n

The Israeli military, in a post on X, warned it would pursue every successor.<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s foreign secretary has said Britain must make sure it \u201clearns lessons\u201d from \u201cthings that went wrong in Iraq\u201d, after Sir Tony Blair criticised Sir Keir\u2019s response to the outbreak of war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

The former prime minister told an event that Britain should have supported the US in their initial strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n

Yvette Cooper hit back at the comments on Sunday, saying she \u201cdisagrees\u201d with Sir Tony\u2019s stance.<\/p>\n

“I think the point is to make sure that actually we learn the lessons from some of the things that went wrong in Iraq,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

“And I think that is exactly what Keir Starmer has done.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US administration has rejected suggestions the current offensive could lead to a war similar to Iraq, with US secretary of defence Pete Hegseth having said: \u201cThis is not Iraq, this is not endless\u201d<\/p>\n

The prime minister said the UK \u201cneeds seriousness\u201d in such \u201cuncertain times\u201d, as the US president launched his latest attack on Britain.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump has again hit out at Sir Keir Starmer over the UK\u2019s involvement in the Middle East conflict, saying that the US does not need anyone to \u201cjoin wars after we\u2019ve already won\u201d.<\/p>\n

It comes after four American bombers landed in the UK and the US started using British bases for \u201cspecific defensive operations\u201d on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The US president was referring to reports that the UK was preparing an aircraft carrier in response to the Middle East crisis.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Defence said it was increasing the preparedness of HMS Prince of Wales and reducing the time it would take to set sail, but that no decisions have been taken to deploy the warship.<\/p>\n

The US president posted on his Truth Social platform: \u201cThe United Kingdom, our once great Ally, maybe the greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s OK, prime minister Starmer, we don\u2019t need them any longer \u2014 But we will remember. We don\u2019t need people that join wars after we\u2019ve already won!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sir Keir\u2019s decision not to grant permission for the first wave of military action prompted a raft of criticism from Mr Trump in recent days, including a personal attack on the Prime Minister as being \u201cnot Winston Churchill\u201d.<\/p>\n

He has also called Britain\u2019s response \u201cvery disappointing\u201d and that it should be allowing America to use its bases \u201cwithout question or hesitation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir later granted permission for \u201cdefensive\u201d US action against Iranian missile sites from UK bases.<\/p>\n

The prime minister has sought to play down the rift and, after Mr Trump\u2019s latest rebuke, Downing Street pointed back to Sir Keir\u2019s earlier comments that the special relationship is \u201cin operation right now\u201d as the two countries share intelligence and work together.<\/p>\n
