{"id":511893,"date":"2026-03-08T22:32:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T22:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/511893\/"},"modified":"2026-03-08T22:32:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T22:32:21","slug":"iran-war-hits-chinas-sulphur-imports-as-economic-fallout-from-conflict-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/511893\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran war hits China\u2019s sulphur imports as economic fallout from conflict grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The escalating conflict in the Middle East is having a direct impact on China\u2019s access to sulphur \u2013 a raw material for producing fertiliser \u2013 just as the country enters its vital spring planting season.<\/p>\n<p>With China sourcing a large chunk of its sulphur from the Persian Gulf, the effective <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/global-economy\/article\/3345291\/shipping-firms-suspend-gulf-routes-iran-war-leaves-132-vessels-trapped?module=top_story&amp;pgtype=section?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">closure of the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> is already sending prices for the chemical shooting upwards as Chinese buyers complain of tightening supplies.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">China relies on imports for 47 per cent of its sulphur supply, according to a December report by Guosen Securities. More than half of those imports come from six Persian Gulf nations, which ship goods through the Strait of Hormuz to reach international markets.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">But Iran has declared the waterway closed to commercial shipping amid its war with the United States and Israel, sending freight costs soaring.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption is already creating issues in China \u2013 the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3250889\/china-vows-boost-farm-output-seed-research-renewed-food-security-tech-self-reliance-push?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">world\u2019s largest grain producer<\/a>, where farmers consume vast quantities of fertilisers and other agrichemicals each year. Sulphur is a key ingredient used in phosphate fertilisers and pesticides, as well as a range of other chemical products.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Allan Pickett, executive director for fertilisers research at S&amp;P Global Energy, said the price of fertiliser delivered in mainland China averaged US$520 in January and February.
