But now, scientists say one sneaky element may increase your heart disease and Alzheimer\u2019s risks: air pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Air pollution has been linked with a slew of serious health conditions, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacadv.2023.100805\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:heart disease;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">heart disease<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41598-025-88807-6&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.prevention.com%2Fhealth%2Fa70518519%2Fair-pollution-increases-alzheimers-disease-risk-study%2F\" data-i13n=\"elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:asthma;elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">asthma<\/a>. A new study of nearly 28 million older Americans adds to that.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, which was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pmed.1004912\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:PLOS Medicine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">PLOS Medicine<\/a>, researchers analyzed data from more than 27.8 million Americans on Medicare, 65 or older, between 2000 and 2018. The researchers compared levels of air pollution exposure with new cases of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, taking into account other chronic health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers discovered that people who were exposed to higher levels of air pollution had a greater risk of developing Alzheimer\u2019s disease and the risk grew with more air pollution exposure. (The link was stronger in people who had experienced a stroke in the past.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings highlight the need for air quality interventions as part of dementia prevention strategies in aging populations, especially those facing overlapping environmental and clinical vulnerabilities,\u201d the researchers wrote in the conclusion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Meet the experts: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuftsmedicine.org\/doctor\/davide-cappon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Davide Cappon, Ph.D;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Davide Cappon, Ph.D<\/a>., director of neuropsychology at Tufts Medical Center; <a href=\"https:\/\/ifh.rutgers.edu\/faculty_staff\/auriel-a-willette-ba-ms-phd\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Auriel A. Here\u2019s what experts suggest.<\/p>\n<p>How might air pollution raise the risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease?<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first study to link air pollution with Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Research published in <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/article-abstract\/2838665\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:JAMA Neurology;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">JAMA Neurology<\/a> in 2025 analyzed brain samples from more than 600 autopsies and found that for every 1 microgram per cubic meter increase in PM2.5 (tiny particulate matter that can be absorbed into the bloodstream), the risk of having a higher build-up of Alzheimer\u2019s disease markers (amyloid and tau) increased by 19%.<\/p>\n<p>The latest study found that air pollution may contribute directly to Alzheimer\u2019s disease risk (vs. causing conditions that may also raise the risk of the disease). Why? Scientists don\u2019t know at the moment, but there are some theories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTiny pollution particles don\u2019t just affect the lungs,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuftsmedicine.org\/doctor\/davide-cappon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Davide Cappon, Ph.D;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Davide Cappon, Ph.D<\/a>., director of neuropsychology at Tufts Medical Center. \u201cWhen we breathe them in, they can get into the bloodstream and put stress on the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With time, that stress may impact blood vessels and increase the risk of conditions like high blood pressure, stroke, and even depression, Cappon says. \u201cWhat\u2019s important in this research is that air pollution appears to raise the risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease even beyond those conditions,\u201d he continues. \u201cIn other words, it\u2019s not just that pollution causes high blood pressure or stroke, which then lead to Alzheimer\u2019s\u2014pollution itself seems to have a more direct impact on brain health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But air pollution may also increase inflammation in the body, along with oxidative stress that can impact brain tissue, says <a href=\"https:\/\/ifh.rutgers.edu\/faculty_staff\/auriel-a-willette-ba-ms-phd\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Auriel A. Willette, Ph.D.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Auriel A. Willette, Ph.D.<\/a>, an associate professor in the Department of Neurology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. (Oxidative stress is an imbalance of unstable molecules and the body&#8217;s ability to neutralize them.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigher long-term exposure not only raises risk, but some of the biological precursors thought to lead to Alzheimer\u2019s disease, including higher brain amyloid burden,\u201d Willette says. \u201cSo air pollution could push the brain into a more vulnerable state by impacting inflammation, vascular, and amyloid-related pathways that may contribute to Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The effect being a little stronger in people who already had a stroke \u201cmakes sense,\u201d Cappon says. \u201cWhen the brain\u2019s blood vessels are already damaged, it may be less able to handle additional stress from environmental exposures,\u201d he says. \u201cIn simple terms, a more vulnerable brain has less resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Cappon stresses that air pollution is unlikely to be the only thing that causes Alzheimer\u2019s disease. \u201cAlzheimer\u2019s disease doesn\u2019t develop from one single cause,\u201d he says. \u201cIt reflects a mix of factors that build up over decades\u2014genetics, vascular health, metabolism, lifestyle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/news\/2021\/higher-ed-lower-risk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:education;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">education<\/a>\u2026\u201d Air pollution may simply be one piece of the puzzle, he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not likely to be the dominant driver on its own, but it may add stress to the brain over time, especially in people who already have vascular or other health vulnerabilities,\u201d Cappon adds.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Willette underscores this: \u201cThe public-health message is clear: When exposure differences are that large and persist for years, air pollution is a serious environmental risk factor to consider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What can you do to combat it?<\/p>\n<p>The researchers in the latest study note that improving air quality may be an important way to lower the risk of dementia. While you can\u2019t do anything about the air quality outside, you can impact the air you breathe indoors, Cappon says. Consider these options if air pollution is common in your area:<\/p>\n<p>Use an air purifier. Not all air purifiers filter out PM2.5, making it important to look for one designed to do this. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/life\/g22066167\/best-air-purifier-review\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:HEPA filters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">HEPA filters<\/a> can typically pull these particles out of your air, though.<\/p>\n<p>Close your windows and doors. Keeping windows and doors closed helps to minimize the amount of air pollution inside your home.<\/p>\n<p>Wear a mask outside. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/g38819435\/best-kn95-n95-masks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:N95 mask;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">N95 mask<\/a> can help to filter out PM2.5 on high-pollution days.<\/p>\n<p>Check the air quality before outdoor exercise. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/clean-air\/outdoors\/air-quality-index\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:air quality index;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">air quality index<\/a> (AQI) is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airnow.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:rating system;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">rating system<\/a> that checks the severity of pollution in your area on a scale from zero to 500. An AQI of 50 or below is considered a good air quality day; an AQI over 300 is considered hazardous. Planning outdoor workouts around air quality can lower your exposure to PM2.5.<\/p>\n<p>Willette notes this, though: \u201cWhile these measures are sensible for reducing particulate exposure, we do not yet have studies that tie such reductions to reduced dementia risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other ways to lower your risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/p>\n<p>Doctors still don\u2019t know exactly what causes Alzheimer\u2019s disease, which makes prevention tricky. However, doctors say there are some key behaviors that seem to be linked to a lowered risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease:<\/p>\n<p>Exercise for 150-plus minutes a week. A healthy body is supportive of a healthy brain, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/203880-clifford-segil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Clifford Segil, D.O;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Clifford Segil, D.O<\/a>., a neurologist at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. \u201cKeep active,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Engage your brain. Dr. Segil often recommends that his retired patients take classes at a local community college or other academic institutions to keep them learning new things. However, reading about subjects you\u2019re unfamiliar with, listening to music, or doing puzzles may help, too, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Interact with friends. Socializing is helpful for brain health, according to Dr. Segil.
