Oscar hopeful Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet continues to face backlash<\/a> for saying \u201cno one cares\u201d about the opera or ballet, this time from the hosts of \u201cThe View.\u201d On Monday morning, the ABC hosts warned the actor to be \u201ccareful\u201d and not so \u201cvapid.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a now-viral clip from last month\u2019s Variety and CNN town hall, Chalamet bluntly declared that he sometimes struggles with fighting for movies in theaters, because he doesn\u2019t want to be working in a medium like ballet or opera \u201cwhere it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, keep this thing alive even though it\u2019s like, no one cares about this thing anymore.’\u201d The comment has sparked criticism online, from fans, celebrities<\/a> and even actual ballet and opera companies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, a classically ballet, Black troupe, I\u2019m offended, and disappointed in what he said,\u201d host Sunny Hostin said on Monday. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize that he was that vapid, and that shallow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, host Sara Haines immediately pointed out that Chalamet\u2019s grandmother, mother and sister (\u201cThe Sex Lives of College Girls\u201d star Pauline Chalamet) were all ballet dancers. So, Haines joked that the actor\u2019s comment seems more \u201clike a family issue.\u201d But it was precisely that element that upset moderator Whoopi Goldberg the most.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou come from a dance family. And so, when you crap on somebody else\u2019s art form, it doesn\u2019t feel good,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel good to see, and you probably didn\u2019t realize that until you said, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m in trouble.\u2019 But then you compounded it, and said \u201914 cents.\u2019 No, when people get mad, it\u2019ll be a lot more than 14 cents. So be careful. I\u2019m just saying, be careful, boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

That final piece drew an audible response from the audience and guest host Sheryl Underwood<\/a>, prompting Whoopi to explain that, to her, Chalamet is still a boy. She then added \u201cno disrespect,\u201d similarly to how Chalamet did in his comments, and called out the oddity of that as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally, don\u2019t apologize when you\u2019ve insulted, because it doesn\u2019t sound right. You can\u2019t say \u2018Oh, this is dumb and no disrespect for\u2019 \u2014 that\u2019s absolute disrespect!\u201d Whoopi noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe View\u201d airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.<\/p>\n
