\n\tThe audience at the 73rd Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards<\/a> got a kick out of Patton Oswalt<\/a>\u2018s cracks regarding Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a>\u2018s controversial remarks about ballet and opera.<\/p>\n

\n\tHosting the\u00a0MPSE<\/a>\u00a0ceremony Sunday in Los Angeles for the fourth straight year, Oswalt kicked off the festivities<\/a> that celebrated sound design. The comedian\u2019s monologue began with quips that called attention to the ongoing debate surrounding Chalamet<\/a> having told Matthew McConaughey<\/a> last month during a Variety and CNN town hall that he would not want to be involved in an art form that \u201cno one cares about\u201d and is struggling to stay alive, citing ballet and opera as examples.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThank God we\u2019re here to celebrate achievement in sound editing and not watching ballet or the opera,\u201d Oswalt said. He added with a laugh, \u201cThank God we are actually watching something that deserves to be alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe jokes led to plenty of laughter from the audience, in addition to some groans. The host then noted, \u201cHe said it after they were done voting. He\u2019s fine. He\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlthough Chalamet made his incendiary remarks to Interstellar co-star McConaughey at the University of Texas at Austin on Feb. 24, clips of this particular segment did not make the rounds on social media until Thursday, the day that Oscar voting closed<\/a>. Chalamet is a nominee for the best actor Academy Award for his lead role in Marty Supreme heading into this Sunday\u2019s Oscar ceremony.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore,’\u201d the actor said at the time. \u201cAll respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tResponding to the comments was the Royal Ballet and Opera, with its team telling The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> in a statement that \u201cmillions of people around the world continue to enjoy and engage\u201d with both art forms. <\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the projects honored at the MPSE event<\/a> were Sirat, Sinners, Frankenstein and Zootopia 2. Oswalt\u2019s monologue featured other topical remarks, including a reference to President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s name having been added to the facade<\/a> of the Kennedy Center. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s great to be here at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre \u2014 or any theater that Trump hasn\u2019t stuck his name on,\u201d the Goat voice star said about the ceremony\u2019s L.A. venue.<\/p>\n
