Which is why <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"a47fbcec-c948-cf4c-9e41-3dfa37588c9c\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=364\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liverpool<\/a>, <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"6ebc2fd0-35d3-733b-5666-b75035a3bce9\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=360\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester United<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c43a00b9-2826-72b3-77a0-62730abc936e\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=363\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chelsea<\/a> are so desperate to qualify for next season&#8217;s competition.<\/p>\n<p>Commercially, they are three of the sport&#8217;s most powerful clubs, but a year outside the Champions League can lead to severe financial turbulence due to the costs of keeping pace with the rest of the elite.<\/p>\n<p>Between them, Liverpool, United and Chelsea have won 11 Champions Leagues\/European Cups. Add in <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"610557ff-e870-ea0e-a3b2-8244df325d22\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=362\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aston Villa<\/a>&#8216;s 1982 European Cup triumph and the four clubs chasing three Champions League spots via the <a data-league-guid=\"6949f3af-300c-35f1-beab-b95669eedd38\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/league\/_\/name\/ENG.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Premier League<\/a> &#8212; assuming <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"feb44e87-58fa-9597-2691-b3c32768ebe4\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=359\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arsenal<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"94fd5d7e-35b1-9d52-c9f2-4a37259bea36\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=382\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester City<\/a> finish in the top two &#8212; have won as many titles as Italy&#8217;s <a data-league-guid=\"9c1e0753-2757-3b78-a6ed-1b595caf8191\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/league\/_\/name\/ITA.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Serie A<\/a> in 70 years of European Cup football.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/story\/_\/id\/48111028\/ranked-10-worst-premier-league-teams-relative-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ranked: The 10 worst Premier League teams, relative to spending<\/a><br \/>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/story\/_\/id\/48088692\/summer-transfer-needs-all-20-premier-league-teams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Summer transfer needs for all 20 Premier League teams<\/a><br \/>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/story\/_\/id\/48150851\/psgs-latest-jordan-collab-jersey-their-5th-kit-2025-26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reigning UCL champions PSG release 5th new kit of season<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But while history and prestige are significant factors in clubs wanting to compete alongside <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"66434654-a8ba-a04c-98e5-6bbd0dbbb780\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=86\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Real Madrid<\/a>, <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"58f7c4a9-c991-4ed4-fe5c-1f833cba75b8\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=83\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barcelona<\/a>, <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"25b5e432-d3d2-939f-f73b-6e531a6fbd91\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=132\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bayern Munich<\/a> and reigning champions <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"79843c9e-0fe0-63b4-b591-9affc0dbd517\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=160\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paris Saint-Germain<\/a>, nothing is more important than the money that Champions League participation generates.<\/p>\n<p>For the likes of Madrid, Bar\u00e7a, Bayern and PSG, playing in the Champions League has become an annual privilege. Their domestic power is now so great that it&#8217;s unthinkable for any of those clubs to miss out on qualification.<\/p>\n<p>PSG&#8217;s last season outside the Champions League was 2011-12, with Bayern (2007-08), Barcelona (2003-04) and Madrid (1996-97) almost forgetting what a season without Champions League football looks like. But there are simply not enough qualification spots for the Premier League&#8217;s so-called Big Six (which continues to include <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"f987a4b2-f3f9-e7f6-eb7d-eda43893be5a\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=367\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tottenham Hotspur<\/a>, who are fighting relegation this season), plus Villa and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"ec6b4352-98d3-424d-6214-778d79b47a01\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=361\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Newcastle United<\/a>, to be able to spend with the confidence that a Champions League payday will fund their operation.<\/p>\n<p>PSG banked \u00a3125.06 million from the UEFA prize fund for winning last season&#8217;s Champions League, with runners-up <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"864b1935-65cc-fb9b-850d-790e4c8a8d47\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=110\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Inter Milan<\/a> earning \u00a3118.3 million. Of the eight quarterfinalists last season, Villa&#8217;s \u00a372.5 million overall Champions League earnings were the smallest, but still a huge financial windfall for the club.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>The price of failing to qualify for just one season of the Champions League is steep, even for Premier League giants like Manchester United and Liverpool.\u00a0Liverpool FC\/Liverpool FC via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>United, who failed to qualify for any European competition this season, are the best example of how much it can hurt a team to miss out. Aside from the UEFA prize pot, they are also missing out on additional matchday revenue at Old Trafford, which amounts to approximately \u00a35 million for every home game. Had they enjoyed Villa&#8217;s run to the quarterfinals last term, United would have had six Champions League home games, which equates to another \u00a330 million they could have earned.<\/p>\n<p>United also have financial penalties within sponsorship deals triggered by failing to play in the Champions League, including a \u00a310 million deduction in their \u00a390 million-a-year shirt deal with Adidas. And although United&#8217;s playing and coaching staff suffer a 25% salary reduction whenever they fail to play in the Champions League &#8212; their annual wage bill was \u00a3313 million in their most recent accounts &#8212; that cost savings (\u00a378.25 million) does not cover the revenue lost by not playing in the Champions League. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/sport\/football\/article\/manchester-united-owe-clubs-revealing-need-champions-league-gk9s5kfz0?gaa_at=eafs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">United owe \u00a3422 million in outstanding transfer payments<\/a> and \u00a3238 million of that figure is due to be repaid by the end of next season, which means a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2023-24 is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea are another club with a huge reliance on Champions League earnings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/feb\/26\/chelsea-made-english-record-355m-loss-in-2024-25-season-uefa-data-reveals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to data released by UEFA<\/a> last month, Chelsea made a loss of \u00a3355 million in 2024-25 &#8212; a figure more than twice as big as the next-highest loss, recorded by <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"539b3343-df3a-e111-6050-4eba24fc90b7\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=167\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lyon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a384 million banked from winning the FIFA Club World Cup last summer was a much-needed financial boost for Chelsea after playing in the <a data-league-guid=\"665af567-2641-30f7-a139-1ae45c954115\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/league\/_\/name\/UEFA.EUROPA.CONF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UEFA Conference League<\/a> last season, which generated just \u00a319.06 million despite Enzo Maresca&#8217;s team winning the competition by defeating <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"a0d67357-ae33-565b-26bf-61b162c9d74c\" href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/team?id=244\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Real Betis<\/a> in the final.<\/p>\n<p>All of ESPN. Despite their league title, which earned Liverpool \u00a3174.9 million in prize money, and \u00a346 million from reaching the Champions League round of 16, the club reported a pre-tax profit of just \u00a315.2 million in their most recent financial accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool also <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/football\/story\/_\/id\/48052260\/liverpool-back-profit-wage-bill-was-highest-premier-league\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported an annual wage bill of \u00a3428 million<\/a> &#8212; the biggest in the Premier League &#8212; and that figure does not include the new contracts awarded to <a data-player-guid=\"49438d5e-de32-9f1b-9aab-5f6ae53f14d0\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/173896\/mohamed-salah\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mohamed Salah<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"c350cf83-87c2-aedd-b25b-7e9f3f3fa4dd\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/157892\/virgil-van-dijk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virgil van Dijk<\/a> last summer, nor does it factor in the salaries paid to new signings including <a data-player-guid=\"d29363ad-0204-25cf-7611-8aff328308b1\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/235662\/alexander-isak\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Isak<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"6fb5c533-f861-37b8-8315-0d57da82124f\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/303748\/florian-wirtz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Florian Wirtz<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"266fab4f-4b99-384e-8dd4-833b3d1d1367\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/304901\/hugo-ekitike\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hugo Ekitike<\/a> following last year&#8217;s \u00a3450 million transfer outlay.<\/p>\n<p>Within the accounts, Liverpool&#8217;s chief financial officer Jenny Beacham made clear how important it is for the team to play at the &#8220;highest level&#8221; to cover the club&#8217;s rising costs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The club does face significant cost challenges, including rises in administrative, staffing and operational costs, alongside the need for us to compete at the highest level of the game, across our men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s teams,&#8221; Beacham said. &#8220;Since this reporting period we have invested significantly to continue to enhance our playing squads, investing in the club&#8217;s present and in its future too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool have recent experience of the downsides of missing out on the Champions League, with J\u00fcrgen Klopp&#8217;s final season as manager in 2023-24 played out in the Europa League &#8212; something that impacted the plans of his successor, Arne Slot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very important for us as a team to be in the Champions League and it has shown how important it is for this club financially,&#8221; Slot said. &#8220;The season when I arrived, there was a reason why we only signed <a data-player-guid=\"05962706-324f-0308-d000-3d59721419fe\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/234306\/federico-chiesa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federico Chiesa<\/a> and that was partly because of the season before there was Europa League football.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know we are in a transition and a transition works better if there&#8217;s money available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So while the Champions League is the only place for the biggest clubs to be, it is no longer simply a prestigious bonus on top of domestic success.
