{"id":515469,"date":"2026-03-10T18:15:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T18:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/515469\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T18:15:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T18:15:08","slug":"our-galaxy-floats-inside-a-pancake-made-of-dark-matter-astronomers-discover-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/515469\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Galaxy Floats Inside a &#8216;Pancake&#8217; Made of Dark Matter, Astronomers Discover : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Milky Way isn&#8217;t just drifting through a giant void in space untethered, but is embedded in a sheet of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73017\" data-postid=\"194494\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">dark matter<\/a> like a blueberry in a pancake, new research suggests.<\/p>\n<p>An analysis of how galaxies move through nearby space maps the gravitational pull of mass we cannot see \u2013 cold dark matter \u2013 suggesting that our local corner of the Universe may have more structure than we previously assumed.<\/p>\n<p>The work from a team led by astronomer Ewoud Wempe of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands may help explain three odd features of the local Universe that astronomers have puzzled over: the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Local_Sheet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Local Sheet<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Local_Void\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Local Void<\/a>, and the quiet Hubble flow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Modeling efforts have long struggled to reproduce the quiet Hubble flow around the Local Group,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41550-025-02770-w\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writes the team in their published paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The observations are reconcilable within \u039bCDM [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-energy-may-not-exist-something-stranger-might-explain-the-universe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Lambda cold dark matter model of the evolution of the Universe<\/a>], but only if mass is strongly concentrated in a plane out to 10 megaparsecs, with the surface density rising away from the Local Group and with deep voids above and below.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/peculiar-flow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"707\" class=\"size-full wp-image-194499\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A diagram of the peculiar velocities in local space. Astron., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>The Local Sheet is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/astronomers-just-realized-the-milky-way-is-too-big-for-its-surroundings\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the structure<\/a> in which the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Local_Group\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Local Group<\/a> of galaxies is embedded, a curiously flat, plane-like arrangement of the Milky Way, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/hubbles-2-5-billion-pixel-mosaic-reveals-andromeda-in-breathtaking-detail\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andromeda<\/a> (our nearest major galaxy), and their neighboring galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>Next to the Local Sheet is the Local Void, a strangely underpopulated pocket of space, from which galaxies appear to recede. The Local Group&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.swin.edu.au\/cosmos\/P\/Peculiar+Velocity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">velocity<\/a> away from the Local Void has been <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1086\/527428\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">described as &#8220;peculiar&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S0273-1177(02)00731-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quiet Hubble flow<\/a> is the mysteriously smooth, regular expansion of the Universe within the local volume, which is difficult to reconcile with the masses of the Milky Way and Andromeda, which should be large enough to throw a gravitational kink into the flow.<\/p>\n<p>To interrogate these mysteries, Wempe and his colleagues turned to the motions of 31 relatively isolated galaxies in local space, collected over several decades in large-scale surveys. The researchers chose these galaxies because their isolation makes them more reliable tracers of local expansion.<\/p>\n<p>With this data in hand, the researchers ran simulations starting in the early Universe, using a mass distribution based on the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cosmic-microwave-background\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73031\" data-postid=\"194494\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">cosmic microwave background<\/a> \u2013 an echoing signal of the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/big-bang\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73033\" data-postid=\"194494\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Big Bang<\/a>. They hoped to reproduce the motions of these galaxies, as well as those of the Milky Way and Andromeda.<\/p>\n<p>The team found that the simulation reproduced the observations only if certain conditions were met: namely, that the mass around us is arranged in a sheet-like architecture, with voids above and below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767618732_248_Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If this is the case, it provides a very tidy explanation for the Local Sheet, the Local Void, and the quiet Hubble flow.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers have already established that the distribution and density of dark matter in the Universe are reflected in the distribution of galaxies. An underlying sheet of dark matter, therefore, would be reflected in the arrangement of galaxies \u2013 the Local Sheet.<\/p>\n<p>It naturally follows that the gravitational attraction of the sheet would pull matter out of adjacent space, so voids on either side would be a natural consequence.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the geometry of the sheet would reduce the gravitational pull inward towards the Local Group, allowing the outer galaxies to expand more smoothly \u2013 thus the quiet Hubble flow.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/behold-the-first-direct-images-of-the-cosmic-web-in-the-dark-reaches-of-the-universe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Behold, The First Direct Images of The Cosmic Web in The Dark Reaches of The Universe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What makes this even tidier is that we don&#8217;t need new, exotic astrophysics to explain it.
