Adilson \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re lucky enough, you can sometimes see them in hordes crossing the roads at certain times of the year,\u201d Dan McCamish, a senior environmental scientist with California State Parks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/07\/28\/tarantula-mating-season-is-coming-brace-for-hordes-of-them\/85276029007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>States like California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Texas can expect to see more of the eight-legged bugs in the next few months as they look for romance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time of year, when it\u2019s time to look for the females, they risk their lives,\u201d Ron Magill, communications director of Zoo Miami, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/news\/tarantula-mating-season-rcna221893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told Today<\/a>. \u201cThey leave their burrows. They go out searching until they can find those females.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCamish explained that tarantulas are nocturnal, so people are most likely to see them from late evening into early dawn.<\/p>\n<p>Male tarantulas will travel as far as 20 miles to find a female to mate with \u2014 and they risk it all to do so.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-77f0a4\">\u201cMore often than not, after breeding with a female, the male dies and the female eats it,\u201d Magill said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1d09a7\">\u201cThis is really giving it all up for love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>States like California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Texas can expect to see more tarantulas in the next few months. tempisch \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>If you come across a tarantula \u2014 or a swarm of them \u2014 experts advise leaving them be. Besides, the baseball-sized spiders are not immediately dangerous to humans.<\/p>\n<p>While their large size often brings fear, they are gentle arachnids and their venom is not a risk to humans. However, some people might experience skin irritation when touching a tarantula due to the little hairs on their bodies, and some might end up being allergic and end up in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a wild animal \u2014 it doesn\u2019t want to be picked up and loved and hugged,\u201d McCamish said. \u201cIn general, the species is very docile, but if you were to handle one, they could bite you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you come across a tarantula \u2014 or a swarm of them \u2014 experts advised to leave them be. wawritto \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s best to leave them alone to avoid any potential risk \u2014 plus they \u201cplay such a huge role in keeping ecological balance,\u201d acting as insect control, Magill said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn truth, they\u2019re gentle, ecologically valuable animals,\u201d McCamish added. \u201cMostly they\u2019re interested in escaping from confrontations \u2013 especially with something they know could squish them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Love is in the air for tarantulas.
