Survivors Want Them Shut Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sean-combs\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sean-combs\" data-tag=\"sean-combs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sean Combs<\/a>\u2019 camp ramps up its efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/sean-diddy-combs-trump-pardon-trial-1235340256\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">secure a presidential pardon<\/a> for the hip-hop mogul, Rolling Stone has learned there are ongoing talks among survivors to send a personal letter to President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/donald-trump\/\" id=\"auto-tag_donald-trump\" data-tag=\"donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> urging him against the idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe only reason he\u2019s coming to Trump now is because he\u2019s desperate,\u201d a source who testified at Combs\u2019 eight-week criminal trial tells Rolling Stone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRolling Stone has reviewed a draft copy of the letter, which admonishes Combs for attempting to \u201creclaim control\u201d and \u201crewrite history\u201d following his conviction on prostitution charges. A pardon, the draft adds, \u201cwould not be justice\u201d but a \u201cdevastating message to survivors everywhere: that our lives, our pain, and our truth are still negotiable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe letter notes signees would be willing to come to the White House to make their case against a pardon in person to Trump. \u201cWe want to tell you the unfiltered truth \u2014 free of legal obstruction, PR spin, or courtroom limitations,\u201d the draft reads. \u201cThese stories deserve to be heard.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTheir concerns were sparked this week by renewed reports that Combs\u2019 associates have escalated efforts to gain the president\u2019s ear following Combs\u2019 acquittal on more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges earlier this month. Even before a verdict was reached, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/trump-addresses-possible-sean-combs-pardon-1235351682\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">publicly mulled<\/a> flexing his pardon power for Combs, whom he was friendly with in the 1990s through the 2010s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe mixed verdict means Combs will most likely face more prison time after being found guilty of hiring male escorts to travel across state lines to have sex with his girlfriends as he watched and filmed the drug-fueled encounters. But Combs\u2019 high-powered defense team has indicated the one-time billionaire is hellbent on securing his release as soon as possible. (Combs has been detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center since his September arrest.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to people in and out of the Trump administration, Combs\u2019 team has intensified their behind-the-scenes campaign in recent weeks. \u201cThe pleading has gotten bigger [this month],\u201d a Trump adviser says, referring to a conspicuous uptick in Combs allies\u2019 attempts to woo Team Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs Rolling Stone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/sean-diddy-combs-trump-pardon-trial-1235340256\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported in May<\/a>, longtime Combs associates and friends secretly worked for months \u2014 even before Trump\u2019s January inauguration \u2014 to establish contacts with Trump officials and other MAGAworld luminaries with the president\u2019s ear. The idea was simple: strike up enough relationships in that universe, portray Combs as the kind of victim that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trump-republicans-pass-law-jail-1235027139\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump pretends to be<\/a>, play up Combs and Trump\u2019s past chummy relationship, and lay the groundwork for begging for a pardon or clemency if needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt appears that moment has arrived. In the spring, it didn\u2019t seem like the rapper had a great chance. Though Trump had spoken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/sean-diddy-combs-trump-pardon-trial-1235340256\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">glowingly<\/a> of Combs in the past, there wasn\u2019t much evidence to suggest this case was on the president\u2019s radar. Some senior administration officials who were aware of Diddy World\u2019s outreach campaigns thought it\u2019d be a bad idea for Trump to rescue Combs, given the nature of the criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIndeed, there are still a number of Trump advisers who feel it would be a grave unforced error to pardon Combs around the same time that Trump and his administration are embroiled in a scandal over their handling of the investigation into the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trump-epstein-distract-obama-russia-time-bomb-1235397768\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>, a convicted sex offender and accused sex trafficker. However, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-allowed-pardon-ghislaine-maxwell-1235395065\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently refused to rule out<\/a> pardoning the financier\u2019s convicted associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, who is angling to be released from prison.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAnd the president has seemed somewhat sympathetic to Combs\u2019 plight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/trump-addresses-possible-sean-combs-pardon-1235351682\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saying in late May<\/a> that he \u201cwould certainly look at the facts\u201d of the case when asked about the possibility of a pardon. \u201cI know people are thinking about it,\u201d he added. \u201cPeople have been very close to asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBased on those comments, combined with a jury finding Combs not guilty earlier this month on the most severe charges, multiple Trump advisers saw the rapper\u2019s odds at securing clemency increase somewhat, with a growing number of people in the president\u2019s orbit at least open to the idea that Combs was \u201cunfairly\u201d treated by the feds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s not clear how likely it is that Trump would ultimately sign on to this. After seeking comment from the White House on this story, an official simply replied: \u201cThe White House will not confirm or deny pardons that may or may not happen.\u201d (A rep for Combs declined to comment.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSources familiar with the matter say that ever since the verdict, Combs\u2019 associates and confidants appear emboldened by the mogul beating charges that could have sent him to prison for life. And several of the Bad Boy Records founder\u2019s allies feel that the chances of a Trump pardon are higher than at any other time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBecause of this, they are working whatever angles they can think of to get the twice-impeached, repeatedly indicted president in Combs\u2019 corner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the past few weeks, longtime allies of the rap mogul have approached political operatives, lobbyists, and others with close ties to Trumpland and government officials, offering to pay them large sums of money if they agreed to help with a potential Trump pardon, three people familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone. One of the sources says the offer they were privy to was in the mid-six figures. However, the sources note that at least some of these offers have come with the condition that much, if not most, of the cash wouldn\u2019t be paid out until after Combs gets pardoned by Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tButtering up Trump for a pardon is one of several contingency plans Combs currently has in play. On Thursday, his legal team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/sean-diddy-combs-prostitution-charges-request-new-trial-1235397735\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filed a 62-page motion<\/a> asking the judge to set aside his guilty verdict entirely or retry him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThey made a range of arguments, including that Combs is an amateur porn director who was simply exercising his First Amendment rights to film so-called \u201cfreak-offs\u201d between his girlfriends and oiled male escorts. His attorneys also returned to their original claim that it\u2019s unprecedented that Combs was charged with the Mann Act prostitution and trafficking statute, which they blasted as having \u201cracist origins.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cTo our knowledge, Mr. Combs is the only person ever convicted of violating the statute for conduct anything like this,\u201d his attorneys wrote. \u201cEven if \u2018prostitution\u2019 includes a defendant who pays to observe two other people have sex with each other, the evidence was insufficient to show that Mr. Combs had any such intent. The proof at trial showed that he typically hired the services of male escorts or dancers advertised openly through lawful businesses, that the men were paid for their time, and that they enjoyed the activities and had friendships with [Cassie and a second ex-girlfriend who testified against him] and were not merely traveling to have sex for money.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt the very least, the attorneys added, Combs should be granted a new trial on these charges alone.
