{"id":517520,"date":"2026-03-11T18:13:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T18:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/517520\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T18:13:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T18:13:14","slug":"trial-begins-for-couple-accused-of-stealing-more-than-700000-from-late-sanger-golf-course-owner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/517520\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial begins for couple accused of stealing more than $700,000 from late Sanger golf course owner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A Fresno County jury heard opening statements Monday in the trial of a couple accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the late owner of a Sanger golf course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prosecutors allege Gina Abercrombie and her fianc\u00e9, Justin Teel, took more than $700,000 from Abercrombie&#8217;s stepfather, Randy Hansen, between 2017 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hansen, who operated the Sherwood Forest Golf Club, died in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Authorities arrested Abercrombie and Teel in Pleasanton in 2023. Both are charged with financial abuse and identity theft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prosecutors say the pair applied for business loans while pretending to be Hansen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The law requires us to prove the defendant makes a false statement, knows it&#8217;s false and uses that statement to get a loan or a payment, something that gives them a benefit,&#8221; a prosecutor told jurors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Defense attorneys offered only a brief response, with one stating, &#8220;Theft, attempted theft, no.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The first witness took the stand Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The trial is expected to continue through the end of May.
