{"id":519438,"date":"2026-03-12T16:33:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T16:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/519438\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T16:33:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T16:33:14","slug":"ozempic-and-wegovy-users-reveal-harrowing-dark-side-of-miracle-weight-loss-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/519438\/","title":{"rendered":"Ozempic and Wegovy users reveal harrowing dark side of \u2018miracle\u2019 weight-loss drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/public-opinion\/poll-1-in-8-adults-say-they-are-currently-taking-a-glp-1-drug-for-weight-loss-diabetes-or-another-condition-even-as-half-say-the-drugs-are-difficult-to-afford\/\">estimated<\/a> 31 million Americans currently on GLP-1 medications, spurred on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/ozempic-wegovy-weight-loss-jab-adverts-investigation-b2696869.html\">by the multitude of ads<\/a> plastered across social media and TV \u2014 not to mention celebrity and influencer testimonials \u2014 promising them a fresh start.<\/p>\n<p>Those ads and personal tales, many of which feature celebrities and reality stars, come with mandated warnings of some of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/ozempic-weight-loss-eating-disorder-b2680750.html\">potentially harmful side effects<\/a> of the active ingredient semaglutide that the medications can cause \u201cin rare cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But for the more than 4,000 Americans who have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of GLP-1 drugs \u2014 including giant<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/novo-nordisk-him-hers-weight-loss-ozempic-wegovy-b2934852.html\"> Novo Nordisk, which produces Ozempic and Wegovy<\/a>\u2014 they claim there was no such warning of the life-altering conditions they now have to live with when they started taking the medications. <\/p>\n<p>Those include a nurse practitioner who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/weight-loss-jab-wegovy-sight-loss-semaglutide-b2936463.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> woke up one morning to find she was blind in her right eye;<\/a> a grandfather who can no longer see his grandkids\u2019 faces; and a California man left devastated by the sudden death of his wife after she suffered a series of violent vomiting episodes. <\/p>\n<p>Had they known the risks, they would never have considered<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/glp-weight-loss-drugs-muscle-metabolism-b2918266.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> taking the drugs<\/a>, the plaintiffs told The Independent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Todd-Engel.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Plaintiffs suing Novo Nordisk include Todd Engel (pictured) who is now registered blind after taking Ozempic to manage his type-2 diabetes. Engel and two others said they would \u2018never\u2019 have take the GLP-1 medications had they known of they carried the risk of life-changing conditions (Motley Rice)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone would have told me there was a chance that a drug I was taking could make me blind, I would never, ever, have taken the first shot,\u201d Diane Wirth, who is blind in her right eye after taking Wegovy for weight loss, told The Independent.<\/p>\n<p>Wirth had tried numerous diets over the years but nothing seemed to work. So after being bombarded by persuasive ads for GLP-1s for weight loss and hearing countless success stories, in February 2025, she tried WeGovy, one of the GLP-1 receptor antagonist medications produced by Novo Nordisk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to lose weight and I had tried dieting,\u201d said Wirth, from Hartwell, Georgia. \u201cIt was a never ending battle. And so my employer had made it available for $35 a month through our prescription plan at work. WeGovy was the only drug that was available for weight loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 66-year-old woke up on a weekend morning in April last year unable to see through her right eye. Her vision was blurred, as though her eye had been \u201csmeared with Vaseline\u201d across the lens, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got up Saturday morning and I was going to help a friend with her yard sale, and I was like, \u2018What is wrong with my eye?\u2019\u201d Wirth recalled. \u201cIt was like a curtain had come down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Diane-Worth.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Diane Wirth, 66, of Hartwell, Georgia, woke up one morning unable to see out of her right eye. (Parker Waichman LLP)<\/p>\n<p>Initially, she put it down to not quite being fully awake yet, and went to her computer to check something before leaving the house. But she was alarmed when she couldn\u2019t see the screen through her right eye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s when I thought something was wrong,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Wirth is now registered as legally blind after being diagnosed with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a rare condition that occurred approximately seven weeks after she started taking weekly Wegovy injections.<\/p>\n<p>A Novo Nordisk spokesperson did not comment on the plaintiffs\u2019 individual cases when approached for comment by The Independent, but said that patient safety is the company\u2019s \u201ctop priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wegovy is approved <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-first-treatment-reduce-risk-serious-heart-problems-specifically-adults-obesity-or\">by the Food and Drug Administration<\/a> for weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>NAION, which occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is compromised, is permanent. It meant that Wirth was forced to retire early as a nurse practitioner, a profession she has loved for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s the only medicine I&#8217;ve taken, I don&#8217;t take any prescription meds,\u201d Wirth said. \u201cI don&#8217;t have any other things like high blood pressure or diabetes or anything like that. So it&#8217;s definitely a shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wirth\u2019s attorney, Jason Goldstein, said his firm Parker Waichman LLP is representing \u201chundreds\u201d of plaintiffs in the mass-tort litigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAION is a devastating diagnosis that frequently occurs without warning and can permanently alter a person&#8217;s independence, livelihood, and quality of life,\u201d Goldstein said.<\/p>\n<p>The attorney pointed out that, following a warning from the European Medicines Agency, Novo Nordisk <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/denmark-compensates-patients-vision-loss-linked-novo-nordisk-drugs-2025-11-21\/\">updated labels in Europe for Wegovy and Ozempic. They now<\/a> warn that semaglutide, the active ingredient, may cause NAION in up to 1 in 10,000 patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I will never see my wife&#8217;s beautiful face ever again\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., however, its labels warn patients of vision changes but not specifically about NAION. <\/p>\n<p>Of patients who experience NAION episodes with one eye, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/ischemic-optic-neuropathy\">15 percent <\/a>will go on to develop it in their other eye within five years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Todd-and-Shelley-Engel.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Todd, pictured with wife Shelley, went on Ozempic in the Spring of 2023 for type-2 diabetes and lost vision in his right eye at the end of that year. His eyesight went in his left eye 10 months later (Motley Rice)<\/p>\n<p>That thought makes Wirth fraught with anxiety before going to sleep, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;re afraid to go to sleep because once you have NAION, you have a risk of developing and then the other eye,\u201d she explained. \u201cI wake up during the night and look at the clock to see if I can still see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wirth\u2019s fear became a reality for 63-year-old Todd Engel, from Howard County, Maryland, who is now also legally blind due to NAION.<\/p>\n<p>He went on Ozempic in the spring of 2023 for type-2 diabetes and lost vision in his right eye on New Year\u2019s Eve. And while he is grateful for the \u201cwonderful\u201d compassion his young grandchildren have shown him, he struggles with what feels like \u201ca role reversal\u201d at times. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will go into a store, whether it be Costco or the grocery store, and our granddaughter, who is 7, she&#8217;ll take me by my hand, and she will tell me, \u2018This way, Pop,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI&#8217;m being pulled along like a puppy dog. I understand what she&#8217;s doing, and I think it&#8217;s wonderful what she&#8217;s doing. But again, it&#8217;s a humility thing for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Engel and Wirth, it\u2019s the little things \u201cpeople take for granted\u201d that they miss the most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust basic meal prep, cutting vegetables, things like that\u2026\u201d says Wirth. \u201cBecause I don&#8217;t have the depth perception that I did when I had both eyes, so it\u2019s definitely changed what I can do. My needlepoint, reading\u2026reading was my favorite pastime. I could read a book a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Engel misses the independence that came with his job as a truck driver and snow plow operator for Howard County, and being able to throw a ball around with his grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe can&#8217;t drive and he can&#8217;t work, which is major, he can&#8217;t play ball,\u201d Engel\u2019s wife said. \u201cIt breaks my heart, but my life has changed. Our whole family&#8217;s life, everything has changed completely. He can&#8217;t play with our grandkids. Everything in our house has been rearranged and organized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Novo Nordisk was slapped with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-criminal-investigations\/warning-letters\/novo-nordisk-inc-717576-03052026\">warning letter last week<\/a> from the Food and Drug Administration, reprimanding the company for \u201cserious violations\u201d in failing to report potential side effects in patients who took Ozempic and Wegovy. <\/p>\n<p>Two separate multi-jurisdiction class actions are now in play after the explosion in lawsuits, with one consolidating cases relating to gastrointestinal injury, and another for plaintiffs alleging they suffered vision loss. The MLDs are being overseen by the same judge.<\/p>\n<p>Lawsuits alleging gastrointestinal injury as a result of GLP-1 drugs are currently in the pre-trial phase in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSemaglutide has proven a wide range of benefits in the GLP-1 class beyond glycemic control and weight loss for people with cardiometabolic disease,\u201d a Novo Nordisk spokesperson said in a statement to The Independent. \u201cConsidering the totality of evidence from clinical trials, post-marketing reports and observational studies, alongside the generally low incidence rate of NAION, Novo Nordisk believes that the \u201cbenefit-risk profile of semaglutide remains favorable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson added that the company collaborates closely with health authorities and regulatory bodies worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Didn&#8217;t have any symptoms until a week before she died\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In early 2024, Tracy Ettinghoff\u2019s wife, Marsha, wanted to lose weight to fit into a \u201cbeautiful dress\u201d for their son\u2019s upcoming wedding, though through her husband\u2019s eyes, she didn\u2019t need to. <\/p>\n<p>Approximately six months after the 76-year-old started taking Ozempic, she fell gravely ill and died suddenly while the couple, from Orange County, California, was on vacation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Tracy-and-Marsha-Ettinghoff.JPEG\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Tracy Ettinghoff and his wife Marsha were on vacation in August 2024 when she fell gravely ill. The 76-year-old was on Ozempic for weight loss and didn\u2019t have any symptoms until a week before her death, when she suffered episodes of violent vomiting (Motley Rice)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#8217;t have any symptoms until a week before she died,\u201d Ettinghoff told The Independent. \u201cShe started throwing up, and one week later she was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The grieving husband and father has filed a wrongful death suit, alleging that his wife\u2019s death was preventable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that Mrs. Ettinghoff\u2019s premature death was substantially caused by her use of GLP-1s and the adverse reactions associated with them,\u201d his attorney Jonathan Orent of Motley Rice told The Independent. \u201cWe believe that sufficient warnings would have prevented this tragic death from ever happening.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ettinghoff said he believes that Marsha tried Ozempic after she was confronted by persuasive commercials touting its success for weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#8217;t think that she needed it, but she wanted to be on it,\u201d Ettinghoff, a real estate attorney, said. <\/p>\n<p>Ozempic is not approved by the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss\">FDA <\/a>for weight loss, but it is frequently and legally prescribed by doctors for off-label use.<\/p>\n<p>Ettinghoff said that the weekly shots didn\u2019t appear to make any difference to his wife\u2019s weight loss but she carried on taking them without any apparent side effects. <\/p>\n<p>In August 2024, en route to their vacation home in the town of Mammoth Lakes in northern California, Marsha suddenly started throwing up. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was under the impression that she had food poisoning,\u201d Ettinghoff recalled. \u201cAfter about three days of her throwing up and not being able to hold any food down, I got to be pretty concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_5531.JPEG\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Ettinghoff has filed a wrongful death suit, alleging that Marsha\u2019s death was preventable. His wife (pictured) wanted to lose weight for their son\u2019s wedding (Motley Rice)<\/p>\n<p>Ettinghoff took Marsha to the emergency room at the local hospital, where she was put on anti-nausea medication and hooked up to an IV. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey couldn&#8217;t figure out what was wrong with her, and so they just said, \u2018maybe it&#8217;s a bug, maybe it&#8217;s a stomach flu, we can&#8217;t figure it out.\u2019 And then they just they discharged her the same day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marsha\u2019s sickness continued for two or three more days, until Ettinghoff found her unable to breathe. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was sitting in a Lazy Boy chair and she could hardly breathe,\u201d he recalled. \u201cShe was still alive, but she could hardly breathe. And when she was breathing, it sounded kind of like she had something in her lungs. It was like a gurgling sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rushed Marsha to the hospital, about a mile away, but during the short car ride his wife became non-responsive. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was yelling at her because she was non responsive\u2026 I looked over while I was driving to the hospital and her head went back just suddenly. She threw up again, and then she went limp,\u201d he said. \u201cI&#8217;m pretty sure she died right there in the car on the way to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marsha was tragically pronounced dead at the hospital. <\/p>\n<p>Ettinghoff said that doctors at the hospital \u201ccouldn\u2019t figure out\u201d what happened to his wife, and at this stage, he didn\u2019t consider Ozempic as a potential factor. <\/p>\n<p>A month after his wife\u2019s death, Ettinghoff obtained copies of his wife\u2019s medical records and shared them with a friend who is a physician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went out to lunch with him, and he said, \u2018Have you ever heard of gastroparesis?\u2019\u201d Ettinghoff recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that Marsha might have died as a result of that,\u201d Ettinghoff\u2019s friend told him.<\/p>\n<p>Gastroparesis, also known as stomach paralysis, has no cure.
