The guitar, which Gilmour played on songs \u201cMoney,\u201d \u201cShine On You Crazy Diamond,\u201d and his \u201cComfortably Numb\u201d solo, beat Kurt Cobain\u2019s previous sales record-holding guitar<\/p>\n

\n\tDavid Gilmour<\/a>\u2018s \u201cBlack Strat\u201d sold for $14.55 million on Thursday at Christie\u2019s auction for the Jim Irsay collection in New York. The sale of the guitar marked the most expensive guitar ever sold, besting the $6 million sale<\/a> in 2020 of the 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic guitar Kurt Cobain played\u00a0during\u00a0Nirvana<\/a>\u2019s iconic\u00a0MTV Unplugged\u00a0performance.<\/p>\n

\n\tGilmour\u2019s guitar was vital in the recording of seminal Pink Floyd<\/a> albums\u00a0The Dark Side of the Moon\u00a0(1973),\u00a0Wish You Were Here\u00a0(1975),\u00a0Animals\u00a0(1977) and\u00a0The Wall\u00a0(1979). He used the guitar when recording the songs \u201cMoney,\u201d \u201cShine on You Crazy Diamond,\u201d and for his solo on \u201cComfortably Numb.\u201d It was estimated to fetch $2 to $4 million prior to the auction commencing.<\/p>\n

\n\tJerry Garcia\u2019s guitar \u201cTiger,\u201d which was custom-made by Luthier Doug Irwin fetched $10 million. It was one of Garcia\u2019s drivers, he played it from 1979-1989 and he played it during his final performance with the Grateful Dead at Chicago\u2019s Soldier Field on July 9, 1995. It was expected to sell for $1 to $2 million.<\/p>\n

\n\tChristie\u2019s The Jim Irsay Collection runs from March 3 to March 17. The aforementioned guitars sold Thursday during \u00a0\u201cThe Jim Irsay Collection: Icons of Popular Culture\u201d\u00a0live auction. The series of sales is billed to include \u201cOne of the greatest troves of memorabilia ever assembled, meticulously compiled over decades by the late philanthropist, passionate music lover, and owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts. A portion of the proceeds of these sales will be donated to philanthropic causes supported by Jim Irsay during his lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIrsay first bought the Black Strat at auction at Christie\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0in June 2019 for a reported $5.245 million, which had set a new record for a guitar at the time.<\/p>\n
