\n\tJohn Stamos<\/a> is sliding into the golden slippers of King Herod just hours before the curtain comes up on Jesus Christ Superstar<\/a> at the Hollywood Bowl<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tStamos\u2019 last minute casting comes after Josh Gad announced<\/a> yesterday that he would no longer occupy the throne on Friday night.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is with enormous heartbreak that I inform you all that unfortunately, I have contracted a virus known as COVID (remember that little bastard from season one of \u2018Earth really sucks right now\u2019?)\u201d Gad wrote in on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\n\tStamos is not just a pretty face. Beyond his acting chops, he\u2019s been a musician for decades, most famously playing with the Beach Boys on a regular basis. He also participated in the Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie and played Corny Collins in Hairspray at the Bowl in 2011.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI am grateful for the chance to step into the gold lam\u00e9,\u201d wrote Stamos on Instagram. \u201cThis is an honor. A dream. And also a little insane because\u2026 I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKing Herod was played by Paul Ainsley in the original 1971 Broadway production and by Josh Mostel in the 1973 film. Alice Cooper rocked the part<\/a> in NBC\u2019s 2018 live concert version of the musical.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor this weekend\u2019s Bowl show, Cynthia Erivo<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0cast in the eponymous biblical role<\/a>\u00a0back in February, when the staging of\u00a0Andrew Lloyd Webber<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Tim Rice<\/a>\u2018s musical was announced, running Aug. 1-3.\u00a0Adam Lambert<\/a>\u00a0was later\u00a0cast as Judas<\/a>, with\u00a0Milo Manheim<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Ra\u00fal Esparza<\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0joining the cast<\/a>\u00a0as Peter and Pontius Pilate. Phillipa Soo<\/a>\u00a0will play Mary Magdalene.<\/p>\n

\n\tDirected and choreographed by Tony winner Trujillo, the Hollywood Bowl\u2019s\u00a0Jesus Christ Superstar\u00a0will be conducted and music-directed by Stephen Oremus (who worked on both the Broadway and film versions of\u00a0Wicked).
