{"id":52159,"date":"2025-08-01T09:01:23","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T09:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/52159\/"},"modified":"2025-08-01T09:01:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T09:01:23","slug":"metas-mixed-reality-glasses-make-my-meta-quest-3-look-like-a-boulder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/52159\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta&#8217;s mixed reality glasses make my Meta Quest 3 look like a boulder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Meta and Stanford University researchers have developed new MR glassesThese specs use holography to produce high-quality imagesSupport rumors that Meta&#8217;s headsets may turn into slim goggles<\/p>\n<p>Meta\u2019s newly published research gives us a glimpse at its future XR plans, and seemingly confirms it wants to make ultra-slim XR goggles.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because Meta\u2019s Reality Labs, alongside Stanford University, published a paper in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X363&amp;xcust=trd_us_4575739408123424487&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41566-025-01718-w&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.techradar.com%2Fcomputing%2Fvirtual-reality-augmented-reality%2Fmetas-mixed-reality-glasses-make-my-meta-quest-3-look-like-a-boulder\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41566-025-01718-w\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored noopener nofollow\" data-hl-processed=\"skimlinks\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X363&amp;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41566-025-01718-w&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.techradar.com%2Fcomputing%2Fvirtual-reality-augmented-reality%2Fmetas-mixed-reality-glasses-make-my-meta-quest-3-look-like-a-boulder\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-merchant-name=\"nature.com\" data-merchant-network=\"SkimLinks\">Nature Photonics<\/a> showcasing a prototype that uses holography and AI to create a super-slim mixed reality headset design.<\/p>\n<p>The optical stack is just 3mm thick, and unlike other mixed reality headsets we\u2019re used to \u2013 like the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/virtual-reality-augmented-reality\/hands-on-meta-quest-3-review\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/virtual-reality-augmented-reality\/hands-on-meta-quest-3-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta Quest 3<\/a> \u2013 this design doesn\u2019t layer stereoscopic images to create a sense of depth. The prototype shown in the image above doesn\u2019t look close to being a consumer-grade product that\u2019s ready to hit store shelves.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, it doesn\u2019t yet seem to pass what\u2019s called the Visual Turing Test. This would be the point at which it&#8217;s impossible to distinguish between a hologram and a real-world object, though that goal looks to be what Reality Labs and Stanford hope to eventually achieve.<\/p>\n<p>Even with this technology still likely years (perhaps even a decade) from making it to a gadget you or I could go out and buy, the prototype\u2019s design does showcase Meta\u2019s desire to produce ultra-thin MR tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.<\/p>\n<p>It lends credence to rumors that Meta\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/virtual-reality-augmented-reality\/meta-quest-pro-2-could-be-back-from-the-dead-yet-again-and-quest-4-is-reportedly-in-the-works\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/virtual-reality-augmented-reality\/meta-quest-pro-2-could-be-back-from-the-dead-yet-again-and-quest-4-is-reportedly-in-the-works\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">next VR headset could be a pair of lightweight goggles<\/a> about a fifth as heavy as the 515g Meta Quest 3.<\/p>\n<p>Given these rumored goggles are believed to be coming in the next few years, they\u2019ll likely avoid the experimental holography tech found in Meta and Stanford\u2019s report, but if Meta were looking to trim weight and slim down the design further in future iterations, the research it\u2019s conducting now would be a vital first step.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/g6TycqTGtiZzgtPEX7DeUj.jpg\" alt=\"The Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses different designs all together\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/g6TycqTGtiZzgtPEX7DeUj.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/g6TycqTGtiZzgtPEX7DeUj.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Are glasses and goggles the future?
