United States<\/a> international James Sands<\/a>‘ World Cup hopes are in jeopardy after a left ankle injury ruled him out of the rest of the Bundesliga<\/a> season.<\/p>\n

Sands was scheduled to have ankle surgery on Friday in Munich, his St. Pauli<\/a> club said.<\/p>\n

St. Pauli gave no timeframe for when the 25-year-old midfielder might return.<\/p>\n

Sands was injured after a foul on Sunday against Eintracht Frankfurt<\/a>. The full extent of the injury wasn’t revealed until days later after scans.<\/p>\n

James Sands has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering an injury in St. Pauli’s Bundesliga clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.\u00a0Joern Pollex\/Getty Images<\/p>\n

Sands has 14 appearances for the United States since 2021. His last appearance came as a starter in a friendly win over Australia<\/a> last October.<\/p>\n

The U.S. is co-hosting the World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico and will play its opening game on June 12 against Paraguay<\/a>.<\/p>\n
